ApproachPark at Black Mt Gap at SP entrance. The Boundary trail is across NC 127.
Route DescriptionHike up Potato on the Boundary trail. This follows the boundary of the Asheville watershed. It is not maintained but the Mt to Sea (white dots for blazes_ uses it for a short length. The trails ramps up some steep rock faces as one progresses higher. The Boundary Trail is easily lost on the way down. Either return by same route or follow a ridge "trail" to Steppes Gap (Through many blowdowns, pass a cabin, hike to the fenceline at Clingmans Peak towers. Go west around the towers. Here you either take the road back to Steppes Gap or trail behind the research buildings over Gibbes to Steppes Gap.) At park office return on Commissary and Buncombe Horse trails to car (or walk down road). Outstanding views from rocks on south end. Can get cold. Hiked this 4/17/2001 temp 27, blowing snow, and 30 mph wind at the park office. I hiked today (4/9/2006) with my 9 yo son, great weather with temps in 50's no wind; could see from the Smokies (SW) to Mt Rogers (NNW).
Essential GearUSFA South Toe map or USGS 7.5 Montreat Quad. Good conditioning, route finding.
