Overview

Carter Peak from The Window Trail

Total Distance: 4.5 miles
Elavation Gain Trailhead to Summit: 1100 ft.
Total Elevation Loss Trailhead to Summit: 480 ft.
Total Elevation Gain: 1580ft.
Estimted Round Trip Time: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: Class 4

From the beginning of The Window Trail, hike down towards The Window for about 1.75 miles until the trail becomes very close to the dry wash. You should be directly below a large scree slope coming down from the Carter/Pt.6847 saddle. Leave the trail at this point, cross the dry wash, and begin a rugged and loose bushwhack up to the saddle. Stay right, as the left part of this scree field is extremely loose.

Round the corner to the right towards Carter, but do not be tempted to climb directly up to the ridge. Bypass the first part of the ridge and scramble directly towards the low point on the it. Once you arrive at the low point, scramble up towards Carter near the ridge staying on the left (south) side. As you near the summit, angle right towards a steep gully coming down off the summit. The 4th class crux will be getting past a large sotol (pic of a sotol) and then scrambling up the remaining portion to the summit.

Topozone Route Infomation

Essential Gear

Long pants and boots are recommended as the scree slope and the bushwhack are quite rugged. This route can be done in the summer but it will be very hot. Take at least a gallon of water if you insist on doing this in the summer months. Watch for rattlesnakes.
