Overview

The Northeast Ridge is one of the safest ways up to Mount Umunhum, second only to Guadalupe Creek. There is some minor bushwacking but nothing like the El Sombroso Ridge. There is poison oak though so be sure to wear clothes that will cover as much exposed skin as possible. At the top of the ridge it is possible to be seen from Mount Umunhum Road but it is easy to stay out of sight. The Northeast Ridge can get fairly steep at times so be prepared for that.

Getting There

Starting from Mount Umunhum Road follow Barlow Road for just over a mile. On the left hand side of the trail there is another wide trail that is facing the opposite direction from which you came so you have to be careful not to miss it. If you were coming from Mount Umunhum Road you would be walking in the direction that the picture below is facing, so it could be easy to miss.

Route Description

Go up the trail and it will quickly become various deer trails, and sometimes no trail at, through the forested part of the ridge. Despite the lack of trails, it is easy to get to the exposed part of the ridge as long as you hike up and do not go wandering off to the sides. Once on the exposed part of the ridge it is easy to follow it toward Mount Umunhum. The Box is visible soon after reaching the exposed part of the ridge and after a short, easy hike towards it you will reach the fence which marks the end of the Northeast Ridge.

This is the kind of trail that goes up the NE Ridge.

Essential Gear

Water and long clothes.
