Please obey all signs and respect private property.

Route Description

Sawmill Logging Trail is a a moderately rough trail to hike. To get to the beginning of the trail you need to go up Big Willow. From the parking lot head up the paved trail until you come to a bench on your left. There will be a road that heads toward the mountain at this point; take this road. The road will start to climb the side of the mountain. When the road turns into the canyon be sure to keep your eye open to the right side of the road. There is a trail that goes into trees; that is the trail. If you have reached to where the water goes under the road through a cement pipe you have gone too far. If this is the case simply turn around, start back down the canyon and keep an eye out for the trail that will now be on the right side of the road.
Once on the trail there are steep switchbacks to hike. After the switchbacks the trail leads to the north slope of Little Willow. Continue until you come to an "Extreme avalanche danger" sign. At the sign take the trail that goes to the left up to the ridge that separates Big Willow from Little Willow. On the ridge there is a trail that goes straight up the ridge, although it is not very obvious. You can explore this trail although it is 'the road less traveled.' On the main trail you will enter into dense fir trees (these are NOT pine trees; :). You are now on the south slope of Big Willow. After a while it becomes steep in some places, in fact from here on out it is just plain steep in most places. Once out or the firs be sure to check out the valley. You will venture through beautiful aspen, keep your eyes out for deer. Ready or not switchbacks again! Keep going. The trail will eventually take you to Bells Canyon. A beautiful sight! You can go down Bells or turn around and back down Big Willow.
