Overview

The Blodgett Route is the easier and more exciting of the two routes up Mill Point. This hike offers amazing views of Blodgett Canyon through its entire length, and some exhilarating climbing along the top of gigantic rock cliffs that make Blodgett Canyon famous. These cliffs have some very old and beautiful trees clinging to them. Trees that have been naturally stunted by strong winds and harsh growing conditions. Sylvester, my vote for the best tree in Montana, and the tree pictured on the Mill Point page, can be found clinging the sides of these cliffs within the first half mile of starting to climb the ridge.

Getting There

This route starts at Blodgett Campground in Blodgett Canyon. There are two parking lots here for hikers; the one on the north side of the bridge across the creek has a trail leading away from it along the base of the Blodgett cliffs. Follow this trail until a visible and easy route to get above the cliffs appears. Once you are on the cliff edge, simply follow the ridge all the way to the summit. This hike is fairly open so the route is easy to see almost the entire way up except for a few sections which involve crossing short sections of forest.

Route Description

The route is about 3.7 miles long and gains about 4200 ft. of elevation. There is no trail, but the route is easy to follow. Most of the hiking is either on grassy soil or on rocky cliff tops which are easy and stable grounds for hiking. There are a few sections of loose rock slide, but these sections are short and can be navigated carefully and easily. The entire route is on top of cliffs so the views are never short of incredible.

Essential Gear

Standard hiking gear with plenty of food and water is all you need for climbing to the summit of Mill Point. It is a good idea to have topo maps of the region for navigation purposes, although as long as the cliffs are followed it is difficult to get lost.
