Overview

Round Top has a little something for everyone. From trail hiking to a fine summit, and lots of great ski descents to easy couloir climbing and now a fun mixed route. For what it is, (which is a short difficult mixed route, then easier climbing to the summit) this is a very fun route. I strongly suspect this route is only in shape in late fall with a melt freeze cycle after early season snowfall. Later in the winter it will be buried by deep snows and earlier it will not freeze up.

Getting There

Follow the trail out of Carson pass to Winnemuca lake. Head up to the base of the Crescent Moon Couloir. Climb the couloir a couple hundred feet until you see a steep and narrow ice choked chute breaking out the right wall of the couloir.

Route Description

Climb the chute on very thin ice and rock at about 70d steepness. The first hundred feet or so hold the most difficulty. Above this climb AI or sn'ice about 55 or 60d that will usually be thin but secure. This will bring you out of the chute onto the N Face of Round Top. You want to follow ice as much as possible thru the rock bands above or you will find slabby down-sloping rock. Follow continuing thin ice up thru rock bands (a few moves of easy mixed) to a slab holding deep snow. Beware of potential movement of this snow. More easy mixed will bring you to a rib where you can traverse right into the final 20 ft of an easy snow couloir. The top of the Crescent Moon is just east of your position.

Essential Gear

The route is too thin in its entirety to hold screws. On the first difficult pitch, the best option will probably be pins. A couple each thick and thin KB's. There are a couple opportunities for 2-3inch cams.
