Getting ThereGet to Gunnison and travel another 60-70 miles until you get to Lake City and then take the Engineer Pass for a while and it will be about 10 or so miles after the Nellie Creek trailhead. Once you get to the Matterhorn Creek Trailhead take a right and head up the 4 wheel drive road for about 1 or 2 miles and you will be at the beginning of the trail.Route DescriptionThis trail is 12.8 miles roundtrip from the trailhead. It's one of the few trails where it stays above 13,000 ft. throughout the whole way. It is straight forward and you get to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. And if you feel up to it you can bag Wetterhorn with it. Once you get to the foot of the mountain you will have two steep hills to climb and then there after you will get to the switchback. There is loose rock on this peak so be careful not to hit your partner. You will then get to one part where you can see one trail clearly but take the shortcut and go between the spheres. It's a little steeper but a fast shortcut. You will then have about a quarter of a mile until you get to the top.GearRegular camping gear if you are going to stay there overnight. Have alot of water especially on this trail. It is one of the longest of the fourteeners.
