Overview
This beautiful normal route offers you the chance to climb two mountains, because the first part ( "Sentiero dello Stivale" ) takes you directly to the summit of Creta di Collina/KollinKofel. It was a warpath built by the italian soldiers in 1915 for supplying the positions on the eastern side of Creta della Cjanevate and on the summit of Creta di Collina.
It's really one of that places ( especially the last part of the route ) that makes you think how this men could have fought a war in such a wild place, and also how useless was their sacrifice knowing that the destiny of the war was decided far from the mountains.
This route follows first the southern ridge of Creta di Collina and then some 30/40 meters before the summit goes towards west to the ledges of the sharp eastern crest of Creta della Cjanevate. The first part is quite easy and partly secured while the second is slightly more difficult ( UIAA I/I+ ) and very exposed. Is very well marked with red-white paint although it's not on the maps. Time required: 8 hours
Route description the warpath to the main summit
From Passo di Monte Croce Carnico take the path n°146 to Creta di Collina and Rifugio Marinelli. This first part is an easy and relaxing hike with nice views to Creta di Collinetta/Cellon, the green Cresta Verde and the huge west face of Creta di Collina/Kollinkofel. Once arrived at a small saddle ( just before "la scaletta" ) turn right and follow the path n°171 called "Dello Stivale" ( the booth ) that gently goes up until the base of the south face of Creta di Collina. On your left you'll meet the mule-track of the first world war that comes from east.
Going up trough small ravines the partly secured warpath will take you to the wonderful green south edge of Creta di Collina, where dark and scary precipices will open on your left. Just before the summit of Creta di Collina turn left and follow the ledge that goes towards Creta della Cjanevate. Going through the italian military emplacements of the WWI the easy ( not above UIAA I but very exposed ) ledges take you straight before the east base of the main summit of the mountain. All the way the views are fantastic to all directions, but in particular to the Coglians group and the green mountains on your left.
The last part looks difficult from far but when you reach it you realize that is an easy scramble that in a few minutes will take you to the west summit of Creta della Cjanevate/Kellerspitzen.
For the descent you can take the same path of the ascent or you can go up to Creta di Collina and then go down from the east crest ( passages of UIAA I/II ) to Cresta Verde and then to the Pass.
Essential gearA good pair of trekking shoes.
