Overview

This trail heads up the ridge in a line from the summit of Sugarloaf Peak to the summit of Ontario Peak. It's a fast way off Ontario (3 miles or so), instead of taking the typical 10 mile hike back to Icehouse Saddle, etc etc.

Looking South

This is the most common trail used to link a whole buncha Eastern San Gabriel peaks together. Often times folks will park in the Icehouse Canyon parking lot, head up Falling Rock Canyon, and take this ridge to Ontario after bagging Sugarloaf. Then onto Bighorn, Cucamonga, Etiwanda, the 3-T's, Harwood, Baldy, West Baldy, and down to the village.

Getting There

From Icehouse Canyon:
Take Icehouse Canyon Trail up a little over 1/2 a mile. On your right, you will see Falling Rock Canyon, splitting Sugarloaf Peak from Ontario Peak. Head up this canyon. Further upcanyon, you will see the trail move southwest up a scree slope towards Sugarloaf's summit. Take this up to the saddle. You can continue up towards Ontario Summit by heading southeast up the prominent ridgeline you're on. Ridgeline dead ends on Ontario's long summitridge. Summit is to the west with a large dead tree atop it.

From the Summit of Ontario Peak:
The trail runs along the top of the ridge between Falling Rock Canyon (north) and Cherry Canyon (south). Stay on this ridgeline, and you'll see the trail. Numerous small cairns help you keep the trail, but if you lose it, just keep heading in a beeline for Sugarloaf.

Once at the saddle between Ontario and Sugarloaf, head down north into Falling Rock Canyon. Negotiating the scree slope is not-so-fun. Slope runs out and turns into Falling Rock Canyon. Continue down the canyon until you cross Icehouse Canyon Creek, hit the trail, and head west to the parking lot.

Route Description

Straightforward. Descending is OK until you hit the saddle between Sugarloaf and Ontario. Below that is a scree slope into Falling Rock Canyon, a real ankle bender. Really loose, and about as fun as a trip to the dentist. Once down in Falling Rock Canyon, it's an easy stroll down to Icehouse and the world.

Looking towards the top of Ontario

Ascending is easy, as you simply go up Falling Rock Canyon, hit the ridge, and take that until you run out of "up".

Essential Gear

-In winter, an axe and crampons are likely to be necessary for safe travel.
-A helmet, if travelling in a group.
