Delano Peak via the north pass. 4wd/high clearance vehicles are needed to reach the pass from upper Big John Flat during the summer months after the snow has melted.
This route offers a ridge walk which straddles the Beaver and Piute County line. The pass where you park your vehicle to start this route is 11,500+ feet, one of the highest areas a land based vehicle can reach in the State of Utah. The scenery from the pass area alone is worth the drive to this point. It also makes an excellent location to start a great ridge walk south to the summit of Delano. The pass coordinates are 38.23168 N, 112.23868 W.
Getting ThereFrom Beaver and I-15.
Exit I-15 in Beaver. In the middle of town, turn east and drive 16-17 miles near the Elk Meadows ski resort. Between mileposts 16 and 17, turn north onto the road going to Big John Flat. From this turnoff to the pass is just over 8 miles on a dirt road. The road above Big John Flat begins to become more rough, with a small water crossing near Poison Creek. Follow the switchbacks to the pass. Once reaching the pass there is a very small radio tower just about 20 feet above to the east on the ridge. Further down is a cut-off road which leads to a much larger radio tower located just east of the ridge. Don't confuse the two.
Another route, yet unproven, is an approach from Marysvale. In the middle of town, turn west on a graded dirt road which leads into Beaver Creek Canyon. This route is 15 + miles of dirt road to the pass. Refer to other sources and current maps and conditions when using this approach. Route DescriptionThis route follows the ridge line south from the pass area all the way to the summit of Delano. In mid summer most of the ridge is covered with tundra and other grassy plants, not much scrub vegetation. Progress can be very quick if you prefer, or you can take your time to enjoy the tremendous scenery of the area all around. The route one way to the summit is just over two miles. Altitude gained from the pass to the summit is around 700 feet, however bring the total to around 1000 feet for a few minor high and low areas on the ridge line.
Be sure to stay on the ridge proper as dropping down the east side of the ridge will ultimately lead you into the upper Poison Creek drainage and will involve some route finding up and around.
Essential GearThe usual day hike items, for a half day. Most any decent boots or shoes can be worn during the summer months.
