The Nuts, Bolts And Insults of 'Choss, Moss and Butt Floss

Put up in the late 1990's by the late Mike Stassman, this is just one of many enjoyable routes in the Cattle Pocket area of Alabama Hills. Its a route that should be done after "punchin' a few doe-gees" and just prior to tossing back a few cold ones while clearing some of that desert sand from a parched throat. Certified fun by the OCHC (Old Climbers Home Coalition).

Gettin'There

Take Whitney Portal Road from Lone Pine till one reaches Movie Road on the right side. Turn onto Movie Road and follow it 1.1 miles till the road splits out to the left. Veer onto this "road" and follow it for 1/10th of mile. The road will bend to the left. Continue for 3/10th of a mile as the road passes some formations on the left. The first one passed is called Paul's Paradise. Continue on until another formation (close to the left hand side of the road) is encountered. This series of walls and towers is called the Cattle Pocket. There is a pull out on the left side. Be sure to use it as a courtesy to other adventures.

Where Do I Start My Adventure In Choss, Moss And Butt Floss?

'Choss, Moss And Butt Floss is located on the tallest tower of the Cattle Pocket area, facing north. Walk approximately 50 feet from the pullout and.....'wha-lah!'....you're there! You're practically looking at it when parked at the pullout.

The route starts on top of a boulder and just left of a left facing corner. Start by climbing thin edges up a steep face, passing 4 bolts before having the opportunity of placing gear to 1" at a crack prior to climbing onto an arete. Continue upward and close to the edge of the arete, passing 4 more bolts to a pair of Mussey hooks. Clips these and lower off.
