Overview

Mill D South, also known as Cartiff Fork has many skiing possiblities to choose from. With a popular waterfall (Doughnut Falls) and some famous peaks like Mount Superior and Kessler Peak, this area sees loads of traffic almost year round.

Getting Up There

There are 2 ways of getting up or into Cartiff Fork......

1. Start at the Alta police station in Little Cottonwood Canyon just above Alta ski resorts entry 1. Follow the power lines till you hit Cartiff Pass.

2. From Big Cottonwood start at the Reynolds Flat parking lot (about half way up canyon) and start walking.

Down Route Descriptions

1. The Hallway Couloir On the eastern side of Mill D South lies a west facing couloir known by most as The Hallway Couloir. Personally I prefer to climb this couloir from the base and the easiest way to find the base is to look for some old left over mining structures. This couloir can sometimes see lots of traffic but if you catch it on a sunny weekday afternoon you can count on being alone.

2. Holy Toledo This open face can be heaven on a powder day. The approach is short, the turns are forever and there is usually a line left over after a crowded weekend. A must do if your in the area.

3. Cardiac Bowl and Lightning Bolt Apron Cardiac Bowl and the Lightning Bolt Apron are worth the effort that it takes to hike up them. Cardiac Bowl is straight forward and most always has tracks all over it. The Lightning Bolt apron is more often looked at then skied.

4. High Ivory area High Ivory is the last of the more obvious runs that dominate Mill D South. There are as many approaches as decent lines and the skin track up to it varies with every user. My advice, stick to the trees till you hit the ridge and then stick to the ridge.

From left to right: Ivory Tower, Ivory Flakes, Tryons and High Ivory

5.Cardiac Ridge Great early season and late season, Cardiac ridge is one of the most skied out runs in Cartiff Fork. If the heli skiers don't beat you to it first than a 5am dawn patroller most likely will.
