Overview

Makekova Kocna valley

Ravenska Kocna valley right bank

The walls above Ravenska Kocna valley (notice the path, bottom right)

Below Jezerska Kocna: the terrace on which the hut lays

Demanding marked and secured mountain-hiking path* (2,30h to 3h).
In its exposed parts the path is secured with metal cables and pegs, wooden footboards and ladders.

This route, other than leading us to the famous Czech Hut (Ceska koca) offers us the magnificent views of two parallel valleys.
The route starts in the middle of the Jezersko village (due SE), traverses along the right bank slopes of one valley (Makekova Kocna), crosses forested front range hills and continues into another valley (Ravenska Kocna upper left bank).

The Slovene Alpine Association (PZS) maintains the marked and secured paths throughout Slovenia, and in fact, we do not need any description of the paths (a map is in general a good idea, so as to keep track of which path we are on!). Well visible signposts and red and white blazes guide us all along the way (in both directions). Basically consider alpine hiking in this form: using marked paths and sticking to them, which safely brings to and back.

* Throughout Slovenia the marked and secured mountain-hiking paths are categorized in:
mountain-hiking path (planinska pot), demanding mountain-hiking path (zahtevna planinska pot), very demanding mountain-hiking path (zelo zahtevna planinska pot).

Getting There

1:50 000 map
1:25 000 map

Buses drive in from Kranj (and even from Ljubljana) to the Jezersko trailhead.
Bus Info: enter Jezersko (Jezersko Kazina) as a destination.

The coordinates show to the beginning of this route.
By clicking the coordinates in the primary info (above), then using the hybrid version and diminishing (or enlarging) one easily spots the ZGORNJE JEZERSKO Trailhead on road 210.
Between Kranj(Slo) and Voelkermarkt(Aus), this road desserves the Kokra trailhead, the Jezersko trailhead(s), and the Vellach trailhead (the Vellach trailhead is along the Austrian road 82).

Also check out the Getting There section on the Range page.

Route Description

The bus stop in the Jezersko village is exactly where an asfalted road (due SE) leads into the Makek valley (Makekova kocna). Sign posts for Ceska Koca or Grintovec are to be found here, and our path leads along the asfalt, soon passing the last houses.
After less than 1 km, we must choose an asfalted road (private road) which splits to the left, up a slope (sign posts for Ceska Koca) -The road continuing in the valley leads to the Slap Cedca waterfall.-
At the end of the asfalt (5 min, house), our signposted path starts up a forested slope, winding, crossing macadamized trails (as well as using them), for instance at the Makek ranch meadows.
From the village, at each meadow, and in a few clearings along the way, the view opens to the Makekova Kocna valley, to the Kocna walls which form a half circle.
After Makek, our path (blazed and signposted) then again crosses the forest, sometimes along a larger trail, until finally reaching the saddle-like Kacji Rob (Snake edge).
Our secured and now quite exposed path continues on the upper left bank of the Ravenska Kocna valley and we are most attracted by the left hand views, from the Babas to the Ledine (Vadine) terrace and to the immense wall going from the Rinkas to Dolgi Hrbet. At one point, a marked path from the Jezersko (lake) trailhead comes in left-hand.
We traverse below Jezerska Kocna's NE face, and suddenly discover the Ceska Koca Hut, on the flat Spodnje Ravni terrace.
