Overview

The Northeast Gulley aka A.Y.A route.

This route is a fun and quick route with short sandstone steps. The formation rises nearly 400 feet, so its really only 20-30 minutes of climbing, total.

Route Description:
Start by hiking up toward the northeast side of the formation and then into the gulley. pick your way easily through the steps, way many fun options. The crux comes at the top of the gulley. Look climbers right to see the notch you head up. After the notch make a move or two up and left to the upper hike and onward to the summit area.

The crux notch: head up through this then head up left with another move or two to the upper hike

History:

This route was introduced to me back in the mid-90's when I was a Field Instructor for the local wilderness therapy program Aspen Acheivement Academy. We did this route every month or so during the winter with the students. There used to be Group Flags up on top of the formation, although there appeared to be none present in the spring of '09.

Getting There

See the main Steele Butte Page.

This picture shows the route in context with the northeast side of the butte, it is the gully delineating the righthand skyline from the body of the formation.
