Overview

Beginning of routeStart of the route
This route is basically an old road that you used to drive up. But they recently closed it off to protect the area along with many other roads. They put up a "winter closure" sign during the winter, when most locals accent it. This route is based on just the accent up Snodgrass not surrounding mountains. While on the hike you will experience alot of beauty from turning aspen trees in the fall, to wildflowers, and then to the wonderful view of the Ruby Range.

Getting There

From Gunnison you could get to Crested Butte by going west for about 50 miles or so. Once at Crested Butte, go towards the ski town of Mount Crested Butte. As you are leaving the ski town, you can see Snodgrass clearly. There is a gate to the left before you make the sharp left turn into Gothic. In the winter, it is the end of the road. There is an area large enough for about 20 cars to park. You can look past the gate and see the summit of Snodgrass and its remaining route ahead.

Route Description

Winter Closure signWinter Closure sign
This is a very short accent to the summit from here. It is a service road like trail that leads you to the summit. The summit is all tree's with some open spots. From what I remember there is an overlook where you could see past the trees. There is also a sign that marks the summit of Snodgrass. If you want to continue to Gothic Mountain on a small trail past the sign and it will be another 2.5 miles from there to the summit, but if you want to go down to Slate River Road from here, it will be about 2 miles from there.

Essential Gear

Sneakers is all you would need for this if you only going to the summit of Snodgrass during the summer/fall. Standard hiking boots would be recommended if you go up to Gothic Mountain from the summit of Snodgrass as the grade turns to a II and some moderate scrambling may be present.

During the winter, snowmobiles are prohibited, but ski and snowshoes are ideal.
