Winter  Sucess!

This was a trip including Clatsop, Columbia, Washington, Polk, Lincoln, Coos, Curry, and Benton counties.

Paved road to trailhead could easily be done by small car.

It was drizzling pretty much the entire hike, save for a few 10-minute periods of pebble-sized hail that pelted me at the summit and on the descent.

With the weather I did not get to enjoy the views but it was fun to summit nevertheless. Did not find the benchmark.

Only saw a lone hiker on her way down on my ascent and 2 heading up on my descent when I was within a mile of the trailhead.

Up the moumtain  Sucess!

Always wanted to climb it. Way easier than I thought it would be when I was young. Glad I finally did it though

Sunrise  Sucess!

A great way to beat the crowds is to do this one at sunrise. I saw two other parties on the trail. This trail is pretty easy for a seasoned hiker, but challenging if you don't hike much. 1 hr 40 min car to car.

Great views for a nice little hike. However, the trail was packed with people.

Saddle  Sucess!

Along with Saddle Mountain SW Peak. Low clouds and rain on this made for a slippery, viewless hike. Interesting trail.

Smoke  Sucess!

My eight year old and I climbed Saddle Mountain on a Monday morning. The low clouds to the west broke open long enough to see the beach with the breakers crashing in. To the east was smoke from the fires, Hood was obscured but we glimpsed Ranier, St.Helens and Adams. On the way up we met one guy coming down, on our descent we met at least ten groups heading up. This was a fun hike , lots of adventure for an eight year old.

Foiled by the clouds  Sucess!

On my way to the coast with a couple hours to spare so I thought I'd exercise my legs a bit. Low level clouds spoiled any chance of seeing Mt. Hood or the ocean; just an ocean of clouds instead. Still an interesting and fun hike.

Great Views  Sucess!

Cold and windy, but clear day. Sections of ice on the trail. Great views of Cascades.

What a View!  Sucess!

Great climb, amazing views. Not many places (as far as I know) where you can see the ocean and so many Cascade volcanoes in the same panorama.

Rewarding hike  Sucess!

One of my favorite hikes in Oregon. I have done this in winter conditions with several feet of snow at night and also several times during clear winter days. The views from the top give you a big volcano summit feel with only a short hike to earn the reward. Here's a photo from my last time there:

Crowded but very worthwhile  Sucess!

You will be hard pressed to find another mountain at 3200 feet with a better view in the northwest. This mountain reminds me of Cardigan and Monadnock in New Hampshire, crowded yet very worthwhile. BearQueen will probably heading back in September.

slippery when wet  Sucess!

Had plans to climb Hood today but the forecast was terrible so went to Saddle Mountain instead. Pouring rain and graupel meant I had the peak to myself. The flowers were blooming and the hike was enjoyable despite the complete absence of views. The chainlink on the trail was quite slippery but with good boots and hiking poles I had no problems.
