Great Range Traverse  Sucess!

This was the fourth summit on a long day hike, followed by Basin and Haystack.

I was joined on this adventure by Mr. Steve and Mr. Baio.

This was my second time on this summit.

after Basin  Sucess!

I went up from the Basin col. It's a nice climb on the rocks! It wasn't that bad. I thought it was going to be worse. Good, tough times in the Adirondacks.

Saddleback Mountain  Sucess!

Climbed with Haystack and Basin via the Range Trail from the Garden. After traversing over Basin, we had a little difficulty ascending the Class 3 slabs below Saddleback's summit block, but otherwise had little trouble. After we began our descent into John's Brook Valley it began to rain, at times heavely, but things cleared up after about a hour.

Steep "trail"  Sucess!

This was part of an 18+ mile loop that included Upper Wolf Jaw, Armstrong, Gothics, Saddleback, and Basin. The descent toward Basin is alarmingly steep and exposed, considering that it is a trail.

many times, range traverse  Sucess!

Always between here and there.

Frostbite Prevention  Sucess!

My pal Tony and I had a snack out of the wind, then headed into a 60-mph gale for our descent. Almost instantly, we each noticed the other's face turning white. We cowered behind the closest rock, threw on our face masks, and made it down unscathed, but respecting the mountain even more.

From the Garden  Sucess!

The last of a 3 peak string with Paul. Intimidating rock "climb" to get to the summit. I appreciated Paul's help with this one. Headed back to the garden after a long day of hiking. Good trip!

Packed  Sucess!

This trail is well-packed. Even though this area did not get the snow that the more western and southern peaks saw, there were lots of people on trail today as word was out that it was one of the few that had been broken since the snow. The trail from the peak of Saddleback to Basin is blown clean, however, and there is a lot of exposed ice and rock. Crampons minimum. Belay is recommended for the stretch near the top.

From The Garden  Sucess!

Started at the Garden and hit this summit, then spent the night at Ore Bed Leanto. Lots of fun. Great views.

Verglace  Sucess!

We were pretty tired from summiting Basin and then the haul up from the Basin-Saddleback col. The way up the west trail had patched that were very steep and icey. The 'trail' below the summit was pretty much a low-grade ice climb. We had a lot of fun, but were relieved to find ourselves at the summit.

Great Range traverse attempt  Sucess!

We took a long break on the windy summit ledge, and I tried to "bend the map" to convince myself we were already on Basin, as it started to sink in that the Great Range Traverse is a lot steeper than the Presidential Traverse.

Saddleback Cliffs as part of Great Range Traverse  Sucess!

From the Garden, one day traverse of Marcy/Haystack/Basin/Saddleback/Gothics/Armstrong/UWJ. The "Saddleback Cliffs" (west side hiking trail) is definitely the hardest 200' of "trail" in the Adirondacks. I haven't done all 46 yet, but that seems to be the consensus, and after climbing it, I believe it.
