Salmon Butte Trail  Sucess!

I don't think there's a better place to see a view of many of the volcanoes in the area. Awe inspiring view and a nice hike too.

A nice hike, nice views. I recommend it over Hunchback Mt to the NW. Beautiful day. Up in 1:48, down in 1:15.

Salmon Butte Trail  Sucess!

I love Salmon River and the Butte is a quick hike to a great view of the wilderness. Look at all those trees!

Salmon Butte Trail  Sucess!

November storms washed out the road to the trailhead, so this thing starts out almost 4 miles (Green Canyon Campground El. 1600') from the actual trailhead to Salmon Butte. Instead of being 4.4 miles, it is temporarily 8 miles to the summit, and a lot of downed trees over the trail. Crampons were huge for the top 1000 ft.

Route Climbed: Salmon Butte Trail  Sucess!

I didn't have class until 6 PM, so I tohught I'd give this one a shot. Beatuiful forest here. Very nice view of Hood and the surrounding area. Many ripe huckleberries on the lower reaches of the trail. Saw 4 other people on the trail.

Very enjoyable hike. Never saw another person, and the views from the summit are fantastic.

9/11/05 Up in 2 hours. Ran into 3 deer at 3500 feet who just hung out. Kept hearing loud bangs in the forest and wondered what was out there but I think it was squirrels eating the huge sub-alpine spruce cones and dropping them. Great views of a newly snow-covered Hood. Same deer were napping in the same spot on the way down. Nice workout for a Sunday morning.

5/15/11 With Karl and Jim. Worried it would be a soaker on the drive up but was only a light sprinkle at the trailhead. Jim must have been angry or stressed this day as his pace was a quick one! About 4200 feet we were on snow. By 4500, it was deep and had begun snowing. We were pushing through waist deep snow with more coming down near the top. Blizzard on the summit. What's up this year? Despite all this, we were on top in about 2 and 1/2 hours and down quicker. Jim slowed down to my slug speed on the way down as I think he had achieved a zen-like state from the workout. :- ) Was back home by 3 pm and walked into a house where my wife was making batches of chocolate chip cookies. Does it get any better?

3/26/16 With Luna. Thick snow still from where the trail flips to the other side of the ridge. Postholing in thigh deep stuff from the clearing on the trail on. Very slow going but we made the summit. Nice dry day in March (except for the constant snow melting off the trees).
