| Vic Hanson | A Beautiful Snowy Summit ![]() Date Climbed: Nov 4, 2001 | |
| We started in Idyllwild at the Deer Springs Trail head, camped at Little Round Valley, and woke up to rain the next morning. We went on up to the summit, during which time it turned to snow, and came down on the east side between Miller Peak and Jean Peak, through Wellman Divide to the Pacific Crest Trail and back to the Deer Springs Trail. | ||

| I cannot get over how much I enjoyed this easy outing. An absolutely stunning mountain with incredible scenery. We started early and had the trail more or less to ourselves...both directions! | ||

| brusy | winter hike ![]() Date Climbed: Mar 7, 2007 | |
| Went from Deer Springs trailhead. First half snow free. Later on snow knee deep, nice to have snowshoes for about 2 miles of the trail if you are there in late afternoon and instep crampons (might or might not be used) for early morning... I wish tehre was more snow... Not too many tracks, compas and map might come handy if you do not know the area... | ||

| asmrz | Good winter hike ![]() Date Climbed: Jan 25, 2007 | |
| Penelope and I hiked the San Jac from the Marion Mtn. trailhead on January 25, 2007. We lost the trail soon after the intersection with Deer Springs Tr. and navigated the NW bowl more or less by recollection with some help of Compass and map. The bowl was mid calf deep snow and slowed us down a bit. RT from the trailhead took us just under 10 hours. Good conditioning hike on a day off. | ||

| Hiked partly on the trail, partly cross country. One friend turned back after about a mile because his leg hurt, another fell asleep about a half mile from the summit, said he felt weird, so I made it to the top alone. Great views other than the smog. You're definitely up a ways! Very icy near the top of the tram, some snow all the way to the top. | ||

| Great easy day hike from tram. The temperature change from Palm Springs (105) to the summit (73) was remarkable. Unfortunately, the fires in the mountains north of Palm Springs made visibility poor in every direction. | ||

| Had a nice day on San Jacinto, Jean, and then on to Miller. Only a few inches of snow on the trail made for an easier ascent than I thought it would be for Dec. Very impressive peak from the valley! | ||

| LC | Great Training Hike ![]() Date Climbed: Jan 1, 2007 | |
| The best training peak for any major climb. Everything from the Tram to peak trail or the cactus to clouds trail, this mountain has everything you could want in terms of training. Used it quite often training for climbing in the Andes, and found it to be superb training grounds. | ||

| This is another one of those peaks I just couldnt stay away from. While living in So Cal, I spent many a weekend on this summit. The only route I ever did was the one from the tramway. Hit the summit, and back to the tram station for some dinner. Get your dining package in advance. I have enjoyed this route in both winter and summer. | ||

| Went up for the day up the Marion Mt trail for a change of pace. Its steeper but a nicely shaded and wooded trail. Very few people on this side compared to all the other routes. | ||

| jazamoo | midnight Cactus to Clouds ![]() Date Climbed: Nov 11, 2006 | |
| A hike with Barry Holchin and comrades, starting from midnight at the Desert Museum trailhead in Palm Springs. We started with 13 people; only 7 summitted. Wonderful weather, though slightly chilly at the top. We summitted at 1:30 PM, and then hiked back to the tram, making it there by 4 PM. We rode the tram back down, instead of hiking. I, for one, was totally pooped and could barely stay awake walking back down. Watching the sunrise was probably my favorite part of the hike, as well as hearing Jennie Thomas yell, "Wooohoooo!" when we summitted, reminded me of a passage from Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Bums": "Suddenly I heard a beautiful broken yodel of a strange musical and mystical intensity in the wind, and looked up, and it was Japhy standing on top of Matterhorn peak letting out his triumphant mountain-conquering Buddha Mountain Smashing song of joy. It was beautiful... then suddenly everything was just like jazz..." | ||

| Second time I went up there. There was some hard ice along the lower part of the trail. Pretty warm though; hiked in shorts and t-shirt all the way to the top. Came back down in the dark; had the choice between slipping on ice or wearing crampons. Took the last option but it was the most ankle-twisting experience ever! I did quite a bit of cursing. I swore only to do it again with a deeper snow pack! kngalaric was on this one. | ||

| Perfect day for a hike with Ol' Walsher. Clear skies, perfect temps and great views from the top. Could have done without turning my ankle on the hike down, but at least I was only a mile from the car... | ||

| Dayhiked from Aerial Tram to Miller (a minor peak near SJ), then on to SJ. From SJ, down to Folly and then back up to Jean. Intended to go on to Marion, but fatigue dictated otherwise. Back to the tram for drinks and appetizers! | ||
