Always a favorite  Sucess!

The solitude of winter makes this an even more fun climb.

OLD FAVORITE  Sucess!

My brother and I climbed Baldy from Lake Kathrine the first time some where around 1974. In 1992 I was leading llama packing trips into the Pecos Wilderness and every other wednesday that July and August we ate our lunches on the summit of Santa Fe Baldy. The route was up a ridge to the south of the summit.

all seasons  Sucess!

Exact date something of a guess. Most memorable was a Feb 1983 climb in a total whiteout, when 18" snow fell as we climbed. Had to dig out the snow caves on return. We had left a shovel pointing out from the top of the caves, anticipating this need; and someone had come by and borrowed the shovel to dig his own caves. He had put the shovel back -- inside one of our caves!

Standard Route  Sucess!

Great hike with perfect weather allowed my wife, little one and I to spend the better part of the sunlit day en route, on the summit and back. Well traveled, but quite a bit of 'trail magic' about.

Beautiful, Long Day  Sucess!

Snowshoed up Saturday, lots of snow. I was breaking trail past Puerto Nambe. Started at 6:50, summited at about 1:00, back to the car at 6:15. Windy and very cold on the summit, not bad lower down. There's way more snow on the east face than on the side visible from town.

Quiet Winter Climb  Sucess!

Snowshoed up just after a good snowfall. The forest was so quiet - the snow just deadend any noises. Once out of the trees, it was sunny and calm. Wish I'd had skis.

A Hard Ass Snowshoeing Trip  Sucess!

We got to the trailhead at 8:30 am, made the summit at 2:30 pm, and got back to the car at 6:30 pm. There was a lot of snow under the trees and only small patches above treeline and on the ridge to the summit. The grey jays were friendly and the weather was nice. It was cloudy and the only spot where it became very cold was at the summit. Only saw one other person on the trip.

Southeast Ridge  Sucess!

There was hardly any snow of mention on this route at all. However the ice sheets were an obstacle. I found crampons to be very helpful, though I did see tracks going out of the way in order to go around these sections. Weather was great, but with the wind on top it was very cold above treeline.

Southeast Ridge  Sucess!

Very pleasant, warm day. There was no snow above treeline, and the trail was packed hard all the way. The only obstacle we encountered of any kind were some pretty big ice sheets covering the trail in a couple spots. Based on current conditions, I'd say any peak in the Pecos (maybe in the the N.M. Sangres) is climable right now.

My wife and I made the r/t hike in great weather. This was my 33rd and final New Mexico County highpoint, thus completing a project I had been working on for almost 5 years. We strongly recommend the hot spas at the 10,000-Waves Japanese Spa just down the highway outsude of Santa Fe.

I've actually done this six times (once in the winter) - and I'd have to say it is one of the most spectacular hikes in the Western United States....unless big thunderheads are building around you while you're on the summit...but other than that, it's a great hike!

Route Climbed: Windsor Trail Date Climbed: July, 1997  Sucess!

Years ago. Began climb with a bad hangover earned from a sleepless night in Sant Fe while attending St. Johns. After the first hour sweated out the poison and things got better. A beautiful climb, tough, long (I think it was 14 or 17 miles roundtrip). My first summit of any stature. The next day we learned that yet another person had been hit--and this time killed--by lightning... Glad we don't have that problem in Washington...

Route Climbed: Windsor/Skyline Trail Date Climbed: June/July 2003  Sucess!

Two climbs now, just a glutton for punishment, as the final ascent to the summit of Badly is very steep. Great views of the Truchas to the north, and the city of Santa Fe and the surrounding area as well. Can't wait to try a night ascent to see the sun rise at 12,600 or so feet, recommend several layers of clothing and a clear, full moon night.

Done as a rather long loop including Lake Peak and Penitente Peak as per the maintainer's suggestions (or challenge). See trip report for more. Lets maybe agree to call this 'The High Road' to Santa Fe Baldy' PICS

I've climbed Baldy in the Winter and Summer, and I actually prefer winter descents. The setting is spectacular when there is snow cover, and you usually have the entire place to yourself.
