Southern 6-pack  Sucess!

Third of a 6 state HP weekend. Flew into Knoxville, then hit the HPs for TN, GA, SC, NC, KY and VA. This is my 42nd state HP and one of my least favorites.

The lack of any sign or marker led me to take out my GPS to make sure I was in the right place. Some small token sign or plaque to honor the state HP would be nice. The place could really use a makeover. There is literally nothing there but weeds, liter and an old campfire ring. (I did eventually find a USGS marker.) The only sign near the summit marks the Chimney Rock trailhead. It states nothing about being the highest point in SC.

Be sure to check out the "overlook" at the end of the parking lot. It's the only thing worth seeing.

Highpoint #1  Sucess!

Tax day for a lot of people, but I took the day to climb the highest peak in the state. Took the foothills trail from 178. It was hard to find, but for the others trying to find it. The trailhead is just across the bridge from where Laurel Valley Rd. intersects 178. 9 miles total. Not bad for a fat man.

A bit of a letdown  Sucess!

Not terribly interesting, or well marked, or anything really. A bit of a pain in the neck to get there but I expect that. Some kind of real marker would have been nice. First of three in two days.

HP #22  Sucess!

Headed up the deaf school road at 10:30 pm. Parked at the dirt parking lot and hiked up the rest in the complete darkness. All clouds were gone and the stars were brilliant. Found the little USGS stump, snapped a pic and headed to Clemson.

HP # 19  Sucess!

One of the least desirable state high points. No view on the top, no special marker to denote the summit, some trash on the ground and a quadrillion mosquitoes to keep me company. Some nice views on the way in though.

Nice Day

Everything was nice and green. Found the only view near the top where the power lines are.

Just another high point...  Sucess!

Drive to lot near summit took care of the initial work... but I did hike the summit trail down a couple miles and back (good for 1100 ft elevation).

Drove as far as I could..  Sucess!

until my car couldn't make it any further because of the snow and ice so I hiked up the last mile or two. Kinda disappointing summit.

HP #16  Sucess!

I summited on what must have been the first day of hunting season. On the drive to Sassafras Mt., I must have passed hundreds of hunters lining the roads waiting for the start time.

Ehhh. Part 2  Sucess!

It's in a really pretty place but... South Carolina and Mississppi are very similar and both could learn a lesson from Florida on turning nothing into something.

Better Than Woodall Mountain...  Sucess!

This was my first of six State Highpoints reached over Memorial Day weekend. The gate was open. This HP was better than Woodall Mountain (Mississippi HP), but not by much. State Highpoint #33 for me.

Quick!  Sucess!

Not as tough to find as I thought - directions provided on Summitpost were perfect! Pretty dumpy summit, however.

Awful Drive  Sucess!

Approached from the north, had an awful time on the tiny winding roads and difficulties even finding the right roads. At least it's off the list!

Foggy  Sucess!

I hiked the Foothills Trail from the Chimneytop Gap trailhead with one of my dogs while my father drove to the top with my other dog to meet us. I could see the surrounding mountains through the leafless trees on the way up, but it was too foggy at the top to see anything. HP19

HP #8  Sucess!

Had a little difficulty finding it, but I got it! This ended a trip that involved bagging six highpoints in one weekend!

Nice View  Sucess!

The place was kind of messy. The sign was destroyed. Other than that I was glad I could mark it off my list. No view from the top. It was my 2 yo. daughters first high point (she got Brasstown and Clingmans after this one).

HP #10 - short walk  Sucess!

I (with my wife (Tracy) and son (Alex), then almost 3 yrs old) did this as part of our second family HP trip. Not much of a view!

US 178 Rocky Bottom  Sucess!

I did this with my wife and son while we were on our way to Hilton Head. Very humid and really not much of a view. More interesting to see it from the road side.
