Schneewinkelspitze belongs to Ankogel GROUP which belongs to Hohe Tauern GROUP.
Schneewinkelspitze is not very important mountain in Ankogel GROUP but its height is more than 3000 meters. It leads in ridge which come from Hochalmspitze, 3346m (NE way) and goes in the SW way to the Saeuleck, 3086m. These two mountains are two of most important peaks in Ankogel GROUP and Schneewinkelspitze is for that reason not very often visited mountain.
Schneewinkelspitze stands in the centre of Ankogel GROUP. From NW it leads above Seebachtal valley where starts the normal route to the Ankogel, 3246m. From a summit to the SW you come to the Saeuleck, to the NE to the Hochalmspitze. There are lons slopes from the summit to the Gossgraben in the south direction which is connected to the Mallnitzer Scharte (pass).
You follow the valley of river Drau to Obervellach, where you turn north towards well known tourist resort Mallnitz (1190m). If you're by car, you turn just before Mallnitz right in Doesenertal and drive till the point where the road is closed (cca 1400m). From here to the top you will need cca 6,5 hours. You cross also the Saeuleck. It is easier if you sleep in the Arthur-von-Schmid-Haus.
You leave A10 highway (Salzburg-Villach) in Gmuend, where you enter the Malta valley. You drive through Malta till Koschach, where you turn left (westwards) into the Gossgraben. From the end of the road you'll need to the peak cca 3,5 hours.
North approach: (Contributed by Mathias Zehring):
Mallnitz can be reached from the north (especally from Germany) via Salzburg - Bischofshofen - Badgastein and then through the railway tunnel that carries also cars. Because this is an important railway route, the apprach can very well be done by train. You can hire a taxi in Mallnitz that brings you into the Doessener Tal valley.

Normal route (east approach):
You drive to the parkplace at the end of Gossgraben, 1670m. You start walking on the very nice macadam route to the Giessener Hutte, 2203m where you come in about 1,5 hour. Then you follow the route to the Hochalmspitze over Steinerne Maennln (536 route) and you come to crossing with Schwarzburger Weg (519 route) . You follow that route to the Lassacher Winklscharte, 2862m. Here you turn left and follow the ridge in SW direction to the Saeuleck. If you turn right you come to the Hochalmspitze over South-ridge Detmolder Grat.
You follow the ridge to the Saeuleck and in about one hour from Lassacher Winklscharte you come to the summit of Schneewinkelspitze.
You can cross the ridge from Saeuleck to the Schneewinkelspitze by the route Detmolder Weg.
The Schneewinkelspitze is situated in the National Park Hohe Tauern.
When To Climb
Schneewinkelspitze is accessible the whole year, although best months for climbing would be July to October. In winter conditions you should come with skis, but if you don't ski, you'll need some winter equipment, especially if snow is hard or slopes are icy. For skiing is possible only the east approach from Giessener Huette. The west approach is very hard in Winter conditions.
