Great trip. Spent 2 days at the last camp with the water and that was a nice choice as it enabled us to bag the summit early and spend alot of time on top looking into the caldera chucking lava and then come down and take a nap before exploring a bit more. Big fire on the way up between the lake and camp made breathing super difficult. We helped with the trash problem by picking up and then putting what we found onto the still smoldering logs.

The Normal Ranu Pane Route.
Such a beautiful trek to the Kalimati. We start around 8 AM from Ranu Pane, took us 2 and a half hour to reach the magnificent Ranu Kumbolo. We rest and had lucnch in Ranu Kumbolo and depart for Kalimati around 2.30 PM, and arrive in Kalimati around almost 5 PM .We decide to open camp in Kalimati.
Woke up around 4 AM, had a quick breakfast and depart for the summit. Took us 3 exhausting hours to reach the summit. On the way to the top I witness one of the most beutifull sunrise I have ever had in a mountain ( beats Kilimanajro and others). The summit push is quite slippery,exposed, and sandy. Took a short nap at the summit and went down quick. From summit to Kalimati is less than an hour.
After a couple of hours of sleep we break camp at around 11 AM and head straight back to Ranu Pane which took us almost 5 hours.
To conclude, Semeru is a great and extremely beautifull mountain. The trekking to Kalimati is nice and easy but from Kalimati to the Summit is when the scrambling and climbing took place. Any beginers can climb Semeru as long as they are fit and well prepared.

Normal route from Ranu Pani
Hard climb from Arcopodo but made it just in time for the sunrise! fantastic scenery all the way
Route Climbed: Ranupane-Ranukumbolo-Kalimati-Summit Date Climbed: 22-25 December 1988
Start in the morning around 9:00 am from RanuPane.
This is the based of Mountain Ranger and the place to report and request entrance fee (approx .IDR 5000).
After 4-5 hours walking, you will be arrived at Ranu Kumbolo Lake.
You have to take your water supply since this is the last water source available.
Continue your journey to KaliMati for next 3-4 hours.
Stand your Tents here and climb to the summit around 3-4 am in the dawn.
The recommended time visit to the summit is from
4:00 am to 11:00 am, NEVER climb the summit above 11:00am, the poisonous and very hot smoke will kill the climbers that stay at the summit above 11:00 am.
Before you climb to the summit leave all the bag and tent in Kalimati to ease your journey.
The last track from Kalimati to Summit is the hardest one. It is sandy ,slippery and very steep. It is only 800-900 meter in distance but it usually takes 3-5 hours to get to the summit.
You can go back to the based camp by using the same route as you climbed. The time to comeback should be shorter than away. You may want to stay at RanuKumbolo Lake for one more night since it is very beautiful place to camp.
You need a good shoes or bring 2nd shoes for backup.

Slept at Killik high base camp above Kalimati and straight on to the scoria slopes at 3.00 AM in the moonlight for the summit attempt.
11 out 12 made it to the summit.
