Great hike!  Sucess!

Hiked up 704c to north slope, to saddle, then summit with my son. Great hike with good views. The weather was good too. We descended the scenic south ridge with some interesting route finding to the saddle that connects to Pancake Rocks area. 9.25 mile loop. Doing the loop was longer but much more rewarding than returning by the ascent route. Lots of animal signs but no sightings.

Route Climbed: Northeast Ridge via Horsethief Park  Sucess!

This was a memorable hike. I particularly enjoyed climbing alongside the boulder field leading up to the saddle. I also visited PT 12586 while up there. Great view of Pikes! I had difficulty relocating the trail coming down, once I got to the trees again. But with the map and compass I got back fine. It made it more of an adventure!

More like 8 miles  Sucess!

Fairly good directions but there is NO WAY this route is 6 miles roundtrip. More like 8 according to two of our GPSs. We followed the route up, but then came back down the south side of the boulder field. There is really no reason that we could see to hike so far up on the north side, it is narrower and perhaps easier crossing down below. Beautiful day and amazing flowers! I will share our GPS tracks, just send me a message.

North approach: Trail 704  Sucess!

A beautiful day I just couldn't waste! About 2 and a quarter hours up, a bit longer down, because the cairned route is easy to lose while descending! Nifty summit.

Northeast Ridge via Horsethief Park  Sucess!

This is definitely one of my favorite local mountains. Everything was perfect today: Lovely weather, friendly company, incredibly lush/green approach...and the summit scramble is a gas. What a great day! Hiking partners: Debbie's CMC outing.

Nice trench from Horsethief Park!  Sucess!

Thanks to whoever recently beat down the path up the "cairned trail" from Horsethief Park. I had a great hike up and down this route on Saturday despite some chilly temps. The deep snow on the summit pile made for some fun and challenging scrambling. The snow trench was drifted over above tree line, but is now in great shape (until the next dump). I posted my GPS tracks at:

Fun  Sucess!

What a fun hike, not to mention an awsome glissade and a fun scramble at the end.

Great hike via Devil's Playground  Sucess!

Wow! What a great little hike! My friend and I went via the Devil's Playground on Pikes Peak, and even though we had to do some sledding, I truly enjoyed myself on this beautiful day.

NE Ridge from Horsethief Park (variation)  Sucess!

A lot of fun: snow and ice added an extra "kick" to the ascent, summit and descent. Really fun summit scramble. Alone up there all day, even though I could see a couple cars on the distant Pikes Peak Road from the summit.

Surprisingly nice and sunny day, until I got caught in a snowstorm on the way out.

This was a really fun hike. The 3-4 ft. gap with the 30 ft. drop is avoidable. There was knee/thigh deep snow on Sentinel Point's saddle's north face; it made for a great descent!

Route Climbed: Our own Date Climbed: November 20, 2005  Sucess!

Beautiful day! Got a late start (1:40p) and due to poor direction on my part, we ended up getting way off course. It was getting late so we made a beeline for the summit, not the way to go. Had to do some 3rd-4th class rock scrambling over some car/van sized boulders. Would have been fun in the summer, but with the snow, it added a new element that I wasn't prepared for. Made the summit just after sunset. Headed down the NE ridge to Horsethief, MUCH better. Did some post holing and glissading down. Cool beaver pond, BTW, wish we would have seen it in the daylight!

Perfect weather got us up to the peak in 2.5 hours. Once you are in the woods, follow the numerous cairns to the clearing below the boulder field. Here you have several choices - I'm not sure which is best. On the uphill, we skirted the boulderfield on the left side until the trail leveled out (a bit). Then we cut across the boulderfield on fairly level terrain. Once on the grass we just made our way to the high saddle. On the descent, we stayed on the opposite side of the boulderfield, hiking/sliding down the steep hill. This eventually leads to the clearing. It was definately rougher hiking than the south side.

From the peak, we went across the drainage, almost due east, to the next saddle. There are some ok views of the next canyon and a reservior in the distance. From the base of Sentinel's summit to this saddle and back took 30 mintues.

This is a great peak that stands tall, visable from all over. Our total time was ~5.5 hours with a 0.5 hour summit stay and a 0.5 hour side hike.

Great views for the entire 6 mile route which is all above tree line. Had nearly 1,000 feet of elevation gain on the return to the trailhead. Outstanding route but get an early start. See the route I have added. I hope it is usefull.
