Sheep Dog in Alpes Maritimes

Sheep Dog in Alpes Maritimes

This is not really a canine companion (at least not for us), it it a working dog, but I don't know where else to put him. We saw him on a steep slope near the upper end of the Vallon de la Gordolasque where he all alone watched over a flock of sheep (perhaps around 50) grazing in the valley maybe a couple of hundred meters away (about the same in yards), quite necessary, for there are wolves, although not many. Nothing seemed to escape his evermoving eyes, but he never made a sound, not even to bark at us. We wondered what happened when it began to get dark. Did somebody human come to help him drive the sheep back to some kind of a sheep shed, or did he do that alone too?

Great dog

I met some like him last year in the Abbruzen, you couldn´t go near the sheep because the dogs would go for you, pretty scary at times!

Re: Great dog

We didn't even try to go near the sheep. He sat there like a strict schoolmaster, and we got the feeling he wouldn't approve!

Re: Great dog

probably a good idea. Those ones in Italy came running. Great dogs though, even if they do think they´re sheep! :o))

Re: It is,

Thank you, Roberto, for the information. He did seem completely calm and self-possessed, probably a very good investment for the shepherd, though I don't know if they get any subsidy to buy such dogs in France.
