Consolation peak  Sucess!

After my previous day's failure to summit Mt. Agassiz, I was looking for a consolation hike, and this fit the bill. I started from an informal "parking lot" next to White Mountain road (approximate coordinates are 37.53211, -118.20557) and reached the summit in less than an hour, travelling at a very leisurely pace. While I do recommend boots and poles since it does get somewhat steep at times, I wouldn't consider this to be more difficult than a hard class 1 / easy class 2. Despite the proximity to the road, this doesn't seem to be a frequently climbed peak; the last entry in the summit register before my 6/21/22 climb was dated 5/19/22.

White Mountains!  Sucess!

Amazing that the road was easily driveable up to about 2 miles before the gate before it was drifted over. Went up this one after summiting Paiute. Love the White Mountains!

Lots of Peaks!  Sucess!

Made my way south along the road tagging eleven peaks on the day with hikes of varying length and difficulty. I like the moonscape feel of this area.

Unsure of exact date. Hiked from research station after dark during geology field class. Returned just before sun came up.

5 peak alternate to White Moutain  Sucess!

The road to the White Mountain TH was snowed in so made do with various peaks in the area, which turned out to be a grand day, especially with the snow in abundance. Did Sheep Mountain, Piute, Limestone Peak, Campito and County Line Hill!

Scouting trip  Sucess!

Climbed this and Limestone on the same day. Was really surprised to see a summit register on Limestone given it's such a miniscule peak.

East Slope  Sucess!

Up the east slope from the road, then over to Puite. Didn't stay long on top due to lightning in the area, some fires started in the Eastern Sierra this day.

Easy hike, great views  Sucess!

I've ambled up to this peak from the White Mountain road several times and have never been disappointed. The view of the Sierras can't be beat. There is no trail, but none is necessary. Line of sight the whole way.

Sheep Mountain

Easy hike with a friend and his mother back in summer 1996. I was most impressed with the tiny dark green plants (about 1/2 inch high on average) covering the ground, but only on the non-dolomitic surfaces. On the dolomitic surfaces there is no soil, only cream-colored limestone. The wide-open feel and the great views were awe-inspiring.

Nice part of a multipeak dayhike

Nice mulitpeak dayhike when combined with Piute Mtn and nearby Limestone Peak. Instead of starting near Patriarch Grove, proceed up to the top of the first hill on the White Mtn turnoff and park on the flat area on the EAST side of the road - Limestone Peak is the slope to the west, and sheep Mtn is an easy stroll right behind it.

East Slope  Sucess!

I was supposed to be climbing in the Minarets, but two tough days in a row (Clark and Florence) meant I overslept in my car... this was a consolation hike, but with some nice views. Not a spectacular area per se, but the striking colours of the rocks, the solitude, and the views of the Sierra mean its not without its charms.

East Slope  Sucess!

After doing White Mountain Peak earlier in the day, took a side trip to do Sheep Mountain (on the summit by 3:00PM). About an hour roundtrip from the main dirt road. Surprisingly good views.

Route Climbed: see below Date Climbed: May or June 2003  Sucess!

Drove over from Vegas one morning. Ascended Sheep via the east slope, then traversed over to Piute Mountain before returning to the saddle between Sheep and the unnamed peak (c. 12250 ft) to the east of Sheep, ultimately descending Sheep's southeast slope.

My first time in the Whites, this trip was exploratory in nature. I saw some wild horses up around 11,500 ft. There's a great lunar, surreal feeling above treeline driving that road up through those high mountains.

The bristlecones fascinated me - and still do. Relunctantly, I drove all the way back to Vegas that afternoon. Came back a week later...
