Overview
One of the most noticable moutains from Seattle (looking over Puget Sound), the Brothers is located in the SE part of the Olympic Mountain range in Washington State. Although the mountain is far from the highest in the range, it is one of the most prominent. This makes it one of the more popular mountains to climb in the area. The mountain was named after a couple of brothers, but the name "brothers" could also refer to the fact that the summit is a "double-summit". When most people refer to "the brothers" they really mean the south summit (which is what is described in this page)
Getting There
Drive to the Lena Lake trailhead on Hamma Hamma road. The trailhead is about 8 miles west of US 101. Head up past Lena Lake and continue clockwise around the lake to the NE side of it. There, you'll encounter a well-marked junction that heads up the east fork of Lena Creek. The trail starts off good, but fades away around the time it crosses the creek. Cross the creek and continue up following faint tread.
Red Tape
NW forest pass - $30/year or $5/day
When To Climb
The Brothers has been & can be climbed just about any time of year, but it is best in spring. During winter, the approach is more difficult & you may encounter avalanche danger. Later in the summer, rockfall may be a serious problem (mostly dislodged by those above you!). Bring a helmet & ice axe any time of year.
Camping
You can camp just about anywhere along the route. Most people camp near where the climber's route crosses Lena Creek. Lena Lake is very popular with the "car campers who are feeling adventerous" crowd.
