Overview

Big Snagtooth is the 94th highest peak in the state of Washington. It is the prominent peak on Snagtooth Ridge and is set within the beautiful North Cascades, with stunning views of the Liberty Bell Group and Glacier Peak. It is not climbed often, in fact there is no maintained trail to it, meaning lots of classic Cascade bushwacking -- not for the faint of heart. The easiest route up is mostly a hike of only a few miles, then involves gaining a ridge then culminating in a respectable scramble up a gully and an attention-grabbing move to gain the summit block--Fred Beckey notes the first party's use of a shoulder stand.

Getting There

Take Hwy 20 (North Cascade Hwy) across Rainy Pass and Washington Pass, and pull over shortly after milepost 166. From there it is a bushwack up to the head of the creek basin on the south side of the highway. Bring a map (USGS Silver Star) and compass.

Red Tape

No parking lot and no trailhead, so no use fees or permits are required.

When To Climb

Spring, early Summer or late Autumn when there is snow on the ground. The bushwacking will be even more difficult with no snow.

Camping

Camping is allowed anywhere along the route to Big Snagtooth (standard NFS backcountry camping rules apply).

Road Conditions

Be sure to check the condition of Hwy 20 before going up there. http://wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/road/mnts/mntbas.htm
