Overview

The Punta Rossa della Grivola lies in the National Park Gran Paradiso. Especially during the climbing season (till late september) it's a favourite area for a lot of day-trippers who walk to it's ascending point.

The mountain isn't that difficult but you should be aware that the final part over the ridge could be very snowy and icy. So bring your crampons and iceaxe with you.
From it's summit you have a fantastic view on the Gran Paradiso (4061m.), La Grivola, Matterhorn and the Wallis Alps.

Routes

For an extensive route discription, see the routesection Valnontey - Summit Punta Rossa della Grivola.
Starting point is a place called Valnontey, about 3 kilometer south of Cogne. From here you start the trip to Rifugio Vittorio Sella (2584m.) which can be reached in a few houres over a well-marked path. Sleep in the rifugio and start about 06.30 a.m. with your ascent.

First walk in western direction and follow the path to Colle Lauson. By p. 2841 go to the right in Northern direction and walk to the waterfall. Now a steep walk to the Colla della Rossa (3195m.)
From the Colla, staying at the same altitude, following the track at the slope on your lefthand-side. From here it's only a steep walk to the ice-field. You can see the summit and the ridge in south-western direction.

You can also start in Cogne and follow the route to Col di Pousset. It's a pretty long walk to an altitude off 3198 meters. At this place you find cabin "Bivacco Gratton" where you can sleep. This cabin only got 9 beds but it's really comfortable. Bring your sleepingbag and something tot eat (or cook).
The next day walk in south-western direction for the ascent of the Punta Rossa della Grivola.

When To Climb

The Punta Rossa della Grivola is usually climbed from June till 1/2 September. When the snow/weather conditions are perfect, perhaps a few weeks longer.
You can say that "as long the Rifugio is open, you can climb".

About Vittorio Sella

In 1889-1890 the famous mountain, climber and pioneer of photography, Count Vittorio Sella, made a number of climbs in Svaneti. Earlier he participated in the expeditions in the Alps, Africa and Asia. He created an impressive series, which was later exhibited by the British Geographical Society.
One of the Caucasian peaks still bear the name of Vittorio Sella. His pictures represent the best samples of the later XIX century photography.
