The name is pronounced Lanzhevitsa and belongs to Julian Alps (link to the group page).

I am describing Lanzevica here because some mountain should be considered as the top of Komna high plateau. Actually I am describing Komna and its beautiful tour skiing (and in summer also hiking) possibilities.

Komna is a special, unique part of Julian Alps. It is a place for romantic souls. Especially in winter and early spring if you walk early in the morning over its endless, snow covered undulated sea, you realise that mountains are not only steep, rocky walls but also soft, lonesome areas, where your traces will be soon lost forever. Seeing pictures of other groups of Alps, Komna could be similar to Totes Gebirge, Hochschwab or Steinernes Meer, to mention only a few.

On south, Komna's border are summits of the South Bohinj Range. They are all first-class hiking goals and in winter many of them also tour skiing goals. The South Bohinj Range ends on Bohinjska Vratca (pass), where Bohinj mountains are connected to the Krn Group. Close north of the pass Lanzevica stands. From Lanzevica toward north another longe mountain range stretches, limiting on the western side the famous Valley of Triglav Lakes. As shown on the map, Komna stretches all the way to the Valley of Triglav Lakes. Actually, geographically also the latter could be considered as part of it. But we shall here leave it aside. East of Komna there is a huge, 1000 deep drop of Bohinj valley, once carved by a glacier.

On Maps Komna plateau is divided on three regions: Zgornja (Upper) Komna, Lepa (Nice) Komna and Spodnja (Lower) Komna.

Although Lanzevica summit lies 500 meters above the plateau it seems like a true part of it. It is the most natural highest point of Komna plateau.

Getting There

The most natural way to reach Komna plateau (and Lanzevica) is from Bohinj valley. The road at the end of Bohinj finishes on the altitude of 654m. There is a big parking place (fee) and a mountain hut. To Dom na Komni (hut, hotel, 1525m) you will walk good 2 hours and your luggage can be transported by a material cable-car.

The other possibility is from west, from Lepena valley, where the road ends on 700m. There's also a mountain hut.

Summer Routes Overview

On the attached map some marked summer paths and some ski tours are marked. Some most recommended summer tours are the following:

1. Ascend from Komna Bohinjska Vratca (pass), 1803m, turn left and follow the South Bohinj Range as long as you wish. Have in mind, that to return from the ridge to Komna huts you will need good two hours.
2. Go from Komna over Bohinjska Vratca (pass), 1803m down to Krn lake, 1400m (or even further up to Krn itself) and return back.
3. Go from Komna to the Valley of Triglav Lakes and perhaps descend down to Bohinj (it's better in the opposite direction).
4. If you admire getting lost in unknown carst terrain, attempt ascending summits north of Lanzevica.

Winter Ski Tours Overview

Komna is crossed by Triglavska smucarska magistrala - Slovenian tour-ski Haute Route (TSM on our map). It is marked by special up to 5m high marks, which stay out of deep snow even in snow rich winters. It starts on Vogel ski resort, goes over Konjsko sedlo (pass), where it reaches Komna, descends down to Govnjac, 1475m, goes up to Dom na Komni (hut), 1520m, and continues over Lepa Komna to the Valley of Triglav Lakes (hut) and further up the valley.

On Konjsko sedlo (pass), where Triglavska smucarska magistrala (TSM) enters Komna region

1. Go from Komna by the TSM to Vogel ski resort and ski down in Bohinj valley (5-6 hours).
2. Go from Komna towards south and ascend one of high summits of the South Bohinj Range (4 hours, hard!).

On Bohinjska Vratca (pass)

3. Go from Komna on Bohinjska Vratca (pass), 1803m, just before the pass turn left, go aroun Mali Bogatin, 1977m and ascend Mahavscek (Veliki Bogatin), 2008m. The last part is quite steep. 3 hours. You can ski down by the valley directly towards right and to Koca pod Bogatinom or even further to Govnjac, 1475m, and from there towards NE to Komna hotel.
4. Ascend from Komna Bohinjska Vratca (pass), 1803m, turn there right (towards north) go around Vrh nad Gracijo, 1916m and ascend Lanzevica, 2003m. 3 hours. From the summit you can ski down directly towards east and reach Koca pod Bogatinom (hut) over Lepa Komna. Of course you can also ascend by this route.
5. Go from Koca pod Bogatinom towards north-west, over Lepa Komna till below the pass between Lanzevica and Kal. From here you can reach Both peaks, Kal is steep (take care of avalanche). 3 hours.
6. Go up and down over endless hills of Lepa Komna to the Valley of Triglav Lakes (hut). 3 hours. Also west of this region there are some ski-tour goals (Celo, Travnik).

When To Climb

October on Zgornja Komna

In summer the best hiking season is spring, which is on Komna plateau in June and start of July. After this period weather stabilizes but the best time to hike is may be not high summer but autumn, till end of October. But if you are able to come with skis, Komna plateau will offer you the most - the best months are from February till first half of May (if winter is rich enough with snow).
