Overview  Hochgolling from the North
Hochgolling, 2863m is the highest point of the long Niedere Tauern group. Especially from north it makes a mighty impression with its compact, 1200m high wall and sharp ridges, streching towards east and north-west. Especially, as this wall rises from a huge amphytheater, covered with a fine, soft grass and many sources of crystal clear water. Spending a night in a tent there was a very fine experience.
From other sides Hochgolling makes a greater impression only from distance, when we become aware, who is the highest in the group. From valleys, coming to foothills, the massive slopes lack elegance, we can admire only height differences. Towards south, a long ridge streches, containing many high summits. This ridge divides the Goeriach valley and the Lessach valley.
In the first place Hochgolling is interesting for mountaineers, who seek harder hikes and easy climbs. I found no evidence that it would offer also high value harder climbs. And the summit is also too steep for tour skiing (at best a 'normal' ski tour could be done only from Gollingscharte).
Being situated between glaciers of Hohe Tauern and limestone walls of Dachstein, Hochgolling is an excellent panoramic mountain. I can hardly remember a mountain, from which I would see so many peaks around. Hohe Tauern, Niedere Tauern, the whole chain of Northern Limestone Alps, lower Gurktal Alps and moutains on the east, and - by me especially warmly welcomed - Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps and Karavanke far on south.

Getting There

For the north approach, we start in the famous tourist resort Schladming, 749m, and drive south into Untertal. The road finishes at Riesach waterfalls, 1079m, where you find a big parking place. This place has also a bus connection with Schladming.
For the south approach you start in Mur valley, Mautendorf, 1123m and Tamsweg, 1022m are two bigger towns. From there you drive north into the long Goeriach valley. In Hintergoeriach, 1260m, the public road ends.

Routes OverviewHochgolling can be reached by marked paths either from north or from south.
1. From north. Riesachfaellen, 1079m - Gollinghuette, 1641m - Gollingscharte (notch), 2320m - Hochgolling, 2863m. 6 hours.
2. From south. Hintergoeriach, 1260m - Landawirseenhuette, 1985m - Gollingscharte (notch), 2320m - Hochgolling, 2863m. 5-6 hours.

Other Places To SeeRiesach waterfalls. Untertal (valley) branches on a point, where two strong creeks join: Steinriesenbach, coming from south (just from below Hochgolling) and Riesachbach, coming from east. Before joining, the latter falls down a steep step, forming a strong and beautiful waterfall. 250 meters above waterfalls the valley is broad and flat again and there a nice Riesachsee, 1338m, lies.
Klafferkessel. South of the valley of Riesachbach and east of the valley of Steinriesenbach, between Waldhorn, 2702m and Greifenberg, 2618m, a famous high plateau lies, covered with many beautiful small lakes and ponds. On the altitude between 2100m and 2300m there's everywhere fresh, clear water, running from pond to pond, from lake to lake. The whole scenery resembles much to Scotland, they say. If you add to the scenery picturesque surrounding summits, with white Dachstein walls in distance, you can understand why this remarcable area is protected as a natural parc.
Red TapeFor the summit ascent there are no limitations. Otherwise the area is protected as the Niedere Tauern National Parc.
When To ClimbThe best months are July to September. When snow lies on trails the ascent can be much more demanding.
