Overview

The Puig Campana with it’s 1410m. rises up behind the Benidorm skyline. With it’s impressive walls it’s one of the most spectacular mountains in this region. For hikers as well for the real rock climbers there is a lot of action on this 2nd highest mountain in this area.
The big advantage is that there is a lot of quietness on this mountain.
Travelling from Alicante to Benidorm, looking to the west you see a huge gap in the western ridge. The legend tells that a giant called Roldan kick out a piece of rock just to give his beloved wife more sun otherwise she would die.
The kicked-out piece splashed into the Mediterranean Sea just before the Benidorm coastline. The little island called L'Illa seems to measure precisely into the gap.
Info by geoedu: The right name of the mountain is " Puig Campana ". Puig means " hill " or " mountain " in Valenciano, the still in use local idiom; and Campana means " bell ", for the similarity of mountain shape with it.

Routes

Much of the climbing on the Costa Blanca is easily accessible, half-rope-length pitches, though for those who want something a little different the impressive mountain of the Puig Campana is well worth to do. For a lot of rockclimbing routes see Rockfax database, Costa Blanca climbing and Costa Blanca Mountainfriends.
For hikers there are a lot of trails up to the summit. Map PRV-14 (Senderos de pequeño recorrido) discribes the route from Finestrat to the summit of Puig Campana, a trail of about 4,5 km which will take you approx 4 hours.
This route shouden't be underestimated. The surface in the gully to the saddle is a mixture of stones, rolling rocks, sand and is very unstable.

When To Climb

You can climb the Puig Campana any time you like, but the best season is the spring and fall. Take attention when you do this one during the summer. It can be very hot. Start at least at 06.30 am and bring yourself lots of water!
In Fall and winter the weather on the North side can change in a minute and transform the area in a cloudy and misty scenery. Bring GPS or compas and warm clothes!

Red Tape

There are no permits required. Take care of the wildlife and enjoy the smell of thyme and rosemary

Getting There

The El Altlet International Airport, just 10km (6 mi) from Alicante's city centre, has flights from major European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dusseldorf and Rome as well as domestic destinations like Madrid, Barcelona and Ibiza.
Trains run from Barcelona, Valencia City and Madrid to Alicante's main Renfe Estación de Madrid, while the Estacion de la Marina connects to smaller cities along the coast, including Denia, Benidorm and Altea.
You can get to Altea or Benidorm by car, on the A-7 motorway from the French border, and the national route N-332 links Alicante to Barcelona and Valencia City. Passenger ships also run to Ibiza and Algiers.

Where to stay

There are a lot of places where you can stay at the Costa Blanca. When you love the crowed, stay in Benidorm. I prefer rest so I always go to Altea.
From here you can do a lot of climbing (Sierra Bernia, Montgo , Penon de Ilfach). There are a lot of mountains surrounding you.
Need a place to stay? Visit the local service shops (Multi Service, right in front of the harbour), or if you have a big wallet, visit Villa Benvenuto
(excellent view on the Sierra Helada!).
