OverviewSmith Peak is the highest point in the Harcuvar Mountains. Although Smith Peak is comparable in size to the nearby Harquahala Mountain, it is less well-known. However, Smith Peak is a prominent desert mountain that rises over 3,000' above the surrounding desert valleys. The summit of Smith Peak is crowded with radio towers, and a gravel road leads all the way to the top. With an elevation of 5,242', Smith Peak ranks way down on the Arizona elevation list. But the new field of Prominence has made Smith Peak a more important mountain. With a prominence of 2,792', it's big enough to make an appearance on the Arizona Prominence Map.
Getting ThereFrom the town of Aguila on US 60, drive due north on the main dirt road out of town. After about five miles, you will hit a T intersection with an east-west dirt road. There is a Maricopa County road sign here. Turn left, and drive west about three miles or so. You will then see a small gray, Smith Peak sign shaped like an arrowhead pointing to the right. This is the turnoff to the Smith Peak Summit Road. If you're not paying attention, you could miss it. Drive up the road through the scenic desert landscape as far as you want. The road gets steeper as you approach the base of the mountains, and low clearance vehicles may have to stop around 3,200' or so. Otherwise, you can drive all the way to the top.
