Dent du Requin

Overview

Among the most popular of the Chamonix Aiguilles, the Dent du Requin (The Shark's Tooth) offers a variety of routes on fine granite. The normal route is the Southwest face at AD- on good granite with a few easy cracks, all taking about 3-4 hours from the Requin Hut. Routes on the east side are in the V to V+ range while the north face (climbed from the Envers Hut) features more challenging routes in the ED3 to TD range. First Ascended by G. Hastings, A. Getting There

Navigating though the moraines at the snout of the Mer de Glace can be challenging, especially when coming down the glacier as it can be difficult to find a good way through the crevasses. From the Montenvers side it is normally easy to pick up a fairly well marked path. Beware also when visibility is low and of impressive heat that can build up in the Mer de Glace valley on a hot summer's day. Otherwise, I would agree though: when it's clear, the scenery is great! Requin Hut Info and Valley Camping

REFUGE DU REQUIN tel 04 50 53 16 96 altitude 2516 m Halfway down the Vallée Blanche glacier run, with a fabulous view of the "Périades" and the "Dent du Géant", this hut is frequented by springtime skiers doing the famous Vallee Blanche run. Hut-keeper from January through mid-May and mid-June through mid-September. Hut-keeper’s phone: 04 50 47 21 89 Sleeps 50 Access: Montenvers train station - path and ladders down to glacier - continue up the Mer de Glace and then the Tacul glacier (Beware of hidden crevasses and snow bridges especially in early season) Follow green markers to ladders, path on right (3-4 hours). Ice axe, rope, and crampons necessary. In winter : Best to take the Aiguille du Midi cable car and ski down "Vallée Blanche".
