There were plenty of people on the summit register. Two hours and forty minutes up (which included the summit of Lookout Mtn) and two hours and twenty minutes down. The saddle ridge between the two mountains had a defined trail that keeps hikers away from exposure for the most part but in winter that trail must be a bit more tricky.

The view from this peak is great. You can see white sands, el malpais, all the way down to Guadalupe Peak, the Sandias and across the basin to the Organ Needle to name a few. I recommend it to anyone in the area

|JRB||1978- Greatest Trip Ever|
Climbed with my good friend Robby. Great to be 19 in college and on an adventure.
Kicked up a rock on the drive to the trailhead and had to have my oil pan and transmission pan welded. Only had a gulf credit card and 10 bucks. Had to get past a "watch pig" (farmer's words - really) to get to a farm house phone. Got a ride with the wrecker to Ruidoso, hitchhiked back to the trailhead with two nuns.
Raccoons ate all our food. Didn't hang it in a hang bag like I had been taught. Buzzed by airforce jets on the ridgeline overlooking the White Sands. Less than 200 feet. Almost jumped off the trail.
Turned back in early June because of snow. Did not know what crampons were.
Greatest trip ever.

Standing on the rear porch of my house in Ruidoso, I glanced across and up... to the Mountain. With little thought (too little?) I walked into my bedroom, stuffed my sleeping bag into a JanSport day pack (small)... put on an old army jacket... grabbed one Payday Bar... and headed out, sans canteen.
I wandered... young, dumb and blissful! Two overnights and a final push up through a too fragile snow field (kept crashing through... 6-8 feet deep!)
I'd motivated myself many times with the thought of having that candy bar on the summit, but by then... a bit tired and dehydrated, I forgot I had it. Was really disappointed to discover that the ski lodge was not on Sierra Blanca (who knew?). Made my way over there eventually... got towed down the hill and dumped off in the parking lot by some really pissed off SAR guys... hitched into town.

With Ski Apache not yet open and the Little Bear Fire Area Closure, I poached Blanca from the Apache Rez. I came up from the eastern ridge, and enjoyed the sunny, grassy south facing slope. Saw a herd of at least 2 dozen Elk, and had the cold, windy summit to myself. I needed crampons or an ax for descending to Ski Apache, as all of the rock had snow and ice over it, and was slippery. I had thought this peak might make a nice winter summit, but I don't think so. Great views, though.

Date Climbed: Sep 19, 2011
I knew that the peak was on Mescalero Tribal Land but from what I had read it seemed that hiking up the peak was tolerated if not encouraged. I decided that if I crossed paths with anyone who asked me not to make the hike or saw signs stating the the summit was closed I would turn around. I made the summit and descended a slightly different route than the one I used to ascend only to find signs stating that access was closed. I now feel pretty guilty about trespassing on tribal land.

Began at 6:00 a.m. via lower and upper deep freeze ski runs, summitted at 7:50 a.m. Beautiful morning, slight breeze, cloudless sky, endless views. Saw two herds of elk, one of about 30, the other between 50 and 60. By the way, where's the sign-in log?

Date Climbed: Jul 27, 2009
My second time up here. First time it was covered in 24" of powder.
This time, I would not be robbed.
Drove from Austin arrived around 11PM, slept uncomfortably in my truck (which was full, due to my moving to San Diego).
Woke up at 6:00, on the trail by 6:30.
The altitude was definitely a factor, the slightest of slopes left me sucking air.
Legs were on fire by the time I summited Lookout, and knew at that point that it was going to be tough going from there.
I got to the upward side of the saddle and bumped into a couple guys and their boys. Took the opportunity to rest while chatting, then started again.
After the scramble, I clambered my way up to the top, and did my Rocky pose on the highest rock there, looked around, did some deep breathing, looked for the register (couldn't find it), then started back down just as some clouds were forming.
On the way down, I bumped into a couple guys on the saddle, and a large group at Lookout. I had made about a mile from the last group when it began hailing and lightning. I had some cover in the forest, but felt bad for those guys who probably had yet to summit.
It was a beautiful hike, saw elk on the way up, summiting was amazing. It was my first peak, and it was probably the most physically challenging thing I've ever done.

Me and my buddy Ben took off at 7AM. Took the long trail through the forest (The North Approach). On the the ski lift and picnic tables, Up to Look out, then over, and up the long long tall tall wall that leads up the ridge to the summit. No need to hurry once you get past lookout. The summit is not going anywhere. Very great climb. We could see well down to El Paso, The Guadalupe Mountains to the SE.
