It's a gorgeous area. This was our first time down that road even though I've been in Alaska for about 25 years--and my wife and I were the only people out there on a summer Sunday. Forgotten corner of a mostly forgotten park.

Does anybody know if there a link between this volcano's name and Jim Mason Skookum, the guy who discovered gold in Bonanza Creek (Yukon) in august 1896 ?

According to a USGS publication, it was named for Skookum
Creek, which is nearby. But was Skookum Creek named
for Skookum Jim Mason? Seems possible--Right near
Skookum Creek is Jim Creek, and Nabesna is an area the
Yukon prospectors would have gotten into.
But a more likely explanation is probably the connection between
the word "skookum" and devils in the minds of the pioneers:
Skookum Creek is right near Devil's Mountain (across the
valley from the volcano).

I definitely have the impression that both this peak and the true summit (which is a little ways away) can be scrambled, but I don't remember the details of why I thought that, and I haven't been all that high on either of them myself. Here's an interesting link about the area:
