TahawusSlide Mountain  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 18, 2006

Tahawus

Climbed via the Curtis-Ormsbee Trail from Winnisook. My first time in the Catskills. An easy hike up a Slide's gentle western slope. The summit was fogged in and there was still some early morning rhyme ice trees.

Amazing views on the trail. The climb up to slide was steep, snowy and icy. Great adventure.

Climbed the easy side Christmas Day 2007. About 3 inches of snow at the base increased to 8 inches on the summit. Clouds above 3500 feet obscured any view. Still a nice day to be hiking and to break out the snowshoes.

I took the LONG route to Slide over Wittenberg and Cornell, and I would say you do the same! Then made a loop and returned to Woodland Valley through a short cut and the Phoenicia-East Branch Trail

A group of us snowshoed up the trail from the west. Spent the night on the summit. It was one of my coldest nights out ever. The air temp. that night was about -20F and the wind was blowing.

While looping part of Slide Mountain Wilderness Area via Phoenicia-East Branch and Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide trails, starting from West Branch Road Trail head, saw my first porcupine in the wild going down Slide towards Cornell. Had a Terrier and Malamute along who were very interested in it also.

Great as a loop hike (approx 16 miles) from woodland valley over whittenberg, cornell, and yes slide, the push to the summit is steep and fun and dumps you onto the summit!

Highest of the Catskills, alright. My favorite Catskill hike is going up Wittenberg, over to Cornell, and up Slide. Great way to do it.

FatalRookRoute Climbed: Phoenicia->Curtis-Ormsbee->Cornell Wittenberg Date Climbed: December 30th, 2005  Sucess!
Trail in very good shape...packed down, but some ice during the late afternoon. Curtis-Ormsbee trail less packed down than others. Summit has about 7 in. of snow where not packed down, but most of it is packed. Cornell-Wittenberg from the east looked in poor condition with deep snow from the summit.

Great hike, and beautiful in winter.

A small group of us did the WCS Loop over the weekend. I agree with another poster that Wittenburg has the best views! Stayed at Giant Ledge for the night and bailed on hiking Panther due to t-storms. Great loop and my first time in the Catskills.

My first backpack! My brother and I start at Woodland Valley and climb Wittenberg, Cornell and then Slide in one day on a sweltering 4th of July weekend. We are sore, exhausted and ready to drop from the 95+ degree temperatures. My brother vows never again and I return two weeks later. My kind of fun.

In the winter it just gets better and the black flies are not so bad then. Still plenty of people on top at any time of the year. I love to use the little used 1880's era trail from near Winnisook to get to the summit of this very visited peak.
