Low clouds, but they parted when we got near the top. Nice trail.

Summited after encountering several feet of snow on the last few hundred feet. Spent the night at the summit. Awoke to a crystal clear valley with incredible views, including Shasta.

Cloudless day with relatively little haze in the Central Valley, which allowed us to see all of Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak! We saw several deer hunters along the trail, but no hikers and no deer.

The trail is well built and maintained. After leaving the East Peak, we followed the West Peak ridge to attempt to make a loop back to Cedar Camp. If you try this, stay on the ridge as much as possible! We descended off the ridge to the right through the unforested hillside and ended up wading through lots of thorny bushes to gain a trail back to Cedar Camp.

Hiked this on my way back to the Bay Area after climbing Mt. Shasta the day before. Took the trail to the East Summit, then headed over to the lower West Summit and looped back via an old unmaintained trail (not shown on the 7.5'). Nice area.

Got up to the summit at sunset. I could barely make out Shasta and Lassen.

A late start and a lot of snow (and postholing) put me on the West summit mid afternoon. A nice peak for dayhiking, but a time consuming drive to the trailheads.

DigglerRoute Climbed: Deafy Glade/Summit Trail Date Climbed: 10 June, 2003  Sucess!

Having been turned back with Marianne in mid May due to various causes including a late start (her car's life was almost at its end), route-finding difficulties, & high, soft snow (w/o snowshoes or even gaiters), I came back on June, and I wasn't gonna take "no" for an answer...

Getting another late start this time, I nonetheless felt it important to attempt the peak via the same route as before (style points were deemed key). I left the Deafy Glade TH @ 14.50. Taking a few short intermittent breaks along the way, I got to the Deafy Glade-summit trail junction @ 16.46, & managed to attain the summit by 18.51. Not having to negotiate a 3-ft high swollen creek en route, or resort to snow-covered bushwhacking up a non-existent trail with a crust of snow too weak to support body weight (not that the 1st trip wasn't great, however), helped immensely.

After lingering at the summit for awhile (unfortunately it was too hazy to see much), talking to this old dude for a bit & eating my 'lunch,' I departed @ 18.53. Trying to avoid being stuck on the at-times-not-easily-discernable Deafy Glade trail at night again (which would've been surmounted, but which would've likely required significantly more time), I made an effort to get down quickly. To get first-hand beta on the standard route, I flew down to the standard trailhead (arriving @ 20.01, leaving @ 20.05), noting its elevation, and the surrounding features of the trail along the way. Dropping down from the T-junction at 20.19, I had enough light to get down the trail w/o getting off-track once. Arriving at the creek @ 21.14, I soaked some of the soreness away, then took off, getting back to my bike, & the Deafy Glade TH, at an early 21.51. Great day, some nice views, and fun hiking!
