| David Naylor | West Crockett ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 5, 2012 | |
| Camped two nights at West Crockett campground. Climbed Crockett Peak day 1, then both Snow Mountain peaks Day 2. It was a total of 16 miles with a side excursion to the falls to wash off the dust and sweat. Ran into rattler near the trail down to the falls, slithered off into a hole NEXT to the trail. Falls gorgeous. Isolated campground, saw nobody else the entire day. Crockett peak is a 1200' climb in less than 1 mile right from the campground. | ||

| Not sure the exact year but had always wondered about that peaky thing on the horizon that you see driving north from the day -- did it as an outing once while staying at Harbin Hot Springs -- had the whole peak to myself. | ||

| started late in the day, 3:44 car to car. A couple of thoughts for others: 1> The trailhead is only 1.8 miles from M10, not 1.7mi then another 1.8 The trailhead isnt visible from the road, but next to the restroom is a trail which leads down to the information post 2> About 1.5miles in, there is a sign which is faded and unclear which way to the summit. The Gary Suttle lead me to think I should go right. You should go straight. Lost about 25 minutes there. | ||

| Long hike in from Crocket TH. Both peaks. Could not find a register on one. Is it there? Few people (4) but a LARGE 7' Rattler did greet me at one time! | ||

| First summit in over a year. Nice hike on Sunday with my son Jackson. We made it to the saddle then decided to summit the west peak. Because in the words of my 7 year old son "that one has the most snow dad"! Think I'll go back in fall or winter for the east peak. | ||

| Did it as an enjoyable two day trip from Summit Springs. Really enjoyed the outing but the drive was sooo long. Tried to come in from 101, but being in Camry and a deepish stream crossing convinced us to take a long detour and come in from the east. Will always wonder if we'd have made it or if it would have been a total disaster. | ||

| At Fouts Camp Junction the map shows a 4 way but I only saw 2 additional ways to go. Totally messed up and went right. Followed trails (old and new) going all over the mountain until finally I realized what happened and I just headed my own way to the top. Kept running into more trails not on the map as well. Made it but only 1 mile visibility all day due to fires. http://www.willhiteweb.com/california_climbing/north_coast_range/snow_mountain_208.htm | ||

| No cars, no people, no deer, no lizards, no snakes, no views. A decidedly uneventful hike without any redeeming qualities other than the exercise and to say I've been to the Colusa/Lake county highpoint. A heckuva lot of driving. Went to Brokeoff in the late afternoon. Trip Report | ||

A very enjoyable hike. Just wish the air was a lttle cleaner for the views. I saw only 4 backpackers headed out so I had the summit all to myself. In fact the entire area as far as humans go, but I did see zillions of lizards. No rattlesnakes though. On my drive out I saw quite a few vehicles with rifles as the next day was the opening of deer season in this zone. The picture is on the west summit. I hit both just to make sure I got the county highpoint.![]() | ||

| Very enjoyable hike out to both East and West summits. Smoke from nearby forest fires pretty much ruined the long-range views, but a nice day nonetheless. The lady at the Stonyford Forest Service office told me the road was closed 1.5 miles below the Summit Springs trailhead due to a slide. But I got up there and it appeared the repairs had been essentially completed, as the road was easily passable. Here's a quote from the SP main page " ... but rattlers are also reportedly present (watch out!)." Reportedly, my ass - I was going down the trail, still well above 6,000 ft elevation, and nearly stepped on a 4-foot long rattler that eventually developed a real bad attitude about having his picture taken. Got back to the trailhead near sunset and decided to sleep in the truck at a nice campsite about a quarter mile down the road instead of trying the long drive home in the dark. I'd just settled in for the night when one of the local good ole boys stopped by to find out what I knew about a group of asians he was convinced were up to no good - most likely poaching deer. Turns out I had met them on the trail, and I had also gotten a pretty strange feeling about them. Anyway, he was hot on their trail, and it was probably best for all parties if he never caught up with them. Spent the next day just taking my time on the drive out, enjoying the views and checking out different areas along the way. Made a side trip to walk around Lett's Lake. It's a pretty lake, but I wouldn't want to camp there on a busy weekend. | ||

| Creek running like crazy, lots of snow above 6200'. Nice warm day, lots of flies. Only one other person on the trail this Saturday (looks like there was a mass of people last weekend for Memorial Day from the summit register). | ||
