ascent of theWest side gulley  Sucess!

I set out this fine day to scout the trail and mountain out for a hike/ climb I will lead here in august. I had not been in to the location in a few years. It was still familiar to me except were drifts of snow obscured the trail. I was kept entertained by the periodic views of diamond peak as I hiked along. The rhododendrons and bear grass were in bloom. I came upon Divide lake at the foot of Mt yoran and I'ts sister mountain South mount yoran. It was not conveniant to rest here the mosquito"s were atrocious. I approached the south Mt yoran summit by way of the west side scree fields. There was a snow field to gain purchase on for a little under half the climb I walked off the snowfield onto an island of trees that runs up from the lake to the base of the gendarmes. It would be the way to go after the snow melts. I walked back onto the scree thinking the furthest right gully would be the way. It was not a good idea as it was unstable and slow. back over to the base of the gendarme and attempt to traverse up in to the left gulley. The rock moved less but was unstable for fixed rock. I was careful to place my weight as i ascended the gully There was some large unstable boulders in the gulley (not good!) I managed to gain the notch between the main summit and the west gendarme. It was about four fourth class moves on questionable fixed rock to gain the summit ridge from the notch with some pretty good exposure. It was a challenging route but I am not going to reccomend it or list it as an alternative. Pretty scary! Fine views an outstanding area!....Larry
