Nice addition...

Never hiked up this one, though I've looked out on it many times from the summit of Kendrick Peak.

Re: Nice addition...

Thanks. You should go up there when you get a chance.

Re: Nice addition...

I've always intended to, but it hasn't yet happened. Perhaps one day soon!

Thanks

This was one of the few places I have been not covered by Summitpost previously. Thanks for filling the void. I climbed this in 1994, but I can no longer remember if I was attracted by the fact it was a volcano or by the interesting name, which made it a fun place to talk about.

Re: Thanks

No Problem. I always like how desolate it seems. Do you have any pictures from your trip? If so, we could use them on the page. Thanks,

Brett

Directions getting there and permit info...

It isn't a veer to the left at every fork...maybe the roads have changed since? Just plug in "SP Crater" in Google Maps, and it actually takes you the correct way.
From 89, it's near mile marker 446, as original directions say. Once you turn left on the dirt road, that is SP Mountain Rd. Then you go on Grandview Rd, and finally, E Tub Ranch Rd takes you to the Crater. There are two trails from that road.
You have to have an Arizona State Land Trust permit to drive on, hike, or camp on this land. Here is the link https://azland.my.salesforce-sites.com/recreationalpermit/. It's cheap...just $15 for an individual. I haven't found any info on whether or not it's okay to camp here, but I'm assuming it is not okay, being private land. If anyone knows for-sure, please leave a comment.
