Spawning Trout at Emma Matilda

We saw a lot of trout spawning in the gravelly bottoms of Lake Emma Matilda's outlet creek. (The creek itself is apparently unnamed, probably because it quickly empties into Pacific Creek.) We had hoped to find otters working the area at dawn but we had to content ourselves with otter signs and these yummy, yummy trout. Here, otter, otter . . . . Photo taken lake June 2008.

There's nothing

like the taste of freshly-caught trout.
What are they doing spawning in June? Guess
they couldn't wait until September? Cheers!!!

Those arent trout.

The split tail of these fish tells me that they are not trout. They are probably just one of the larger species of minnow in the stream. Also, they lack an adipose fin, something that every trout has. It is a small fin just above the tail.

Thanks - I don't see any adipose fin either. But I also don't see any minnows on the GTNP list of fish found in the park:

So I'm not sure what we have here. Other ideas?
