Spiders...

can be beautiful, but always deadly.

Great catch, nice focus, Eric.
Cheers,
Marc

Re: Spiders...

Thanks Marc...that spider was really gorgeous! I could have done without seeing it in the killing act though...but that, too, is nature, and nature has that pitiless law of "eat and get eaten"...

Re: YIKES!!!!!

Yes, that spider really combines the beautiful with the creepy, doesn't it? One thing's for sure: I wouldn't want to be the fly...Entre nous: if I could have had the spider just on it's own, that's how I would have preferred to take the photo. Only: time was limited, and usually, once the spider is busy with it's prey, it takes ages...
Cheers, Chad, and thanks for your comment and vote,
Eric

Re: YIKES!!!!!

The fly is cool. I used to have a pet tarantula. Bought it just to test myself. I did get used to it, but never touched it, and cleaning the cage was an exercise in stress management. But the most interesting moments were watching it eat crickets or shed her skin (an amazing three hour process). Had it for ten years.

Two of a kind ..

"Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, " Dear friend what can I do,
To prove the warm affection I've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice;
I'm sure you're very welcome -- will you please to take a slice?"

"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "kind Sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!"

Great photo!

Do you know what kind of spider that is? I don't think we have them in Denmark, I have never seen it in the Alps either.

If you think the spider is bad, then just reflect on where the meat in the supermarket comes from!

Re: Great photo!

As to the precise name of that particular spider, I searched, but couldn't find out for sure, precisely because there were many similar spiders in that online catalogue of European spiders.

Re: Great photo!

In Western America, we call them Garden Spiders. They're creepy, but perform a
beneficial service of catching and consuming
common garden pests like what Ejnar eludes to.

Re: Oh mannnnn

Hi Paulo! :-) No, I'm afraid I don't know it's accurate name either. It's surely related to what the Germans name Kreuzspinne, but whether it really is one, I couldn't say.
Thanks for stopping by and for your comment and vote!

Eric
