Spruce Cones

Spruce Cones

Norway Spruce (Picea abies) grows in lower elevations of Wetlinska Meadow Massive. This evergreen conifer reaches height from 30 to 50 meters. The tree starts bearing cones when it is 30-40 years old. Cones are very large and face downwards ( the cones of very similar tree- Silver Fir (Abies alba) are facing upwards). They mature in October. While the seeds are ripening, a fragrant resin (Resina Piceae) sips from the cones. This resin is used in making essential oils.
