fossils!  Sucess!

I parked a bit north of one of the active mining areas but south of the beige water tank with the land posted for no trespassing. An hour and fifty minutes to hit the island high point but any thoughts of doing anything else evaporated when I saw the ancient seabed exposed on the surface. It was a pleasant bushwhack, with very few bushes.

Full Ridge for Black Friday  Sucess!

Started at the main trailhead on the west side and did the ridge from there all the way to the Dome and then cut down and ran back to the car in 6 hours. Glad Logan Ledford talked us in to getting the south highpoint before proceeding on. Awesome scrambling the whole way!

Entire ridge traverse  Sucess!

With Jennilyn Eaton; we started at the South end and followed a ridge North, found the bike trail, then merged onto the jeep trail up to near the flat-topped peak. We then traversed the main island ridge North to Castle Rock, continued over enjoyable 4th-class quartzite to the North summit, then to the lower North summit, then down the ridge to the weather station. From there we traversed the slope West to the island road and ran back 8 miles to the car. It was 20 miles total in 6.5 hours.

Getting above the inversion  Sucess!

Horrible inversion this week. I needed to get up out of the smog. I hiked Craner Peak on Monday and every time I'd rest for some water or a breather I'd be looking above the inversion over to Stansbury Island. I attempted Stansbury a year ago but turned around 50 vertical feet from the top because it was getting late (and I didn't realize how close I was). It was fun to be on the other side of the valley on top of this one looking across to the Lakeside mountains and Craner.

I parked at the No Trespassing Sign, walked the road ~1.5 miles and went up a ridge. All class 1-2. No hands needed. 25-30 degrees the whole time was PERFECT hiking weather. Surprisingly, the only snow to be found was between the road and the base of the first elevation gain. 8 miles round trip. 3 hrs 45 min.

I'm sure I'll be back to this one seeing how I live so close now. Maybe next time I'll pick see if I can hit one of the other peaks on the island.

Dates:
Fall of 2013 solo - wandered around the bonneville shoreline
Jan 25, 2014 solo - direct ridge from road
Nov 19, 2014 -with students from GHS
May 5, 2017 - w/ S.Durka direct ridge from road

In the rain  Sucess!

Rained pretty much all day. Fun scramble on wet rocks in the clouds. Couldn't see any views, just clouds and fog. After Castle Rock, went around to the west and up to the highpoint. Didn't see another person all day. :)

Castle & Stansbury HP  Sucess!

3 of us wanted to work off some thanksgiving dinners so Sp'er Kadee, her friend Mike and I worked our way up to the ridgeline and tagged Castle Peak first, dropped down to the west a bit and then made our way up to the HP of Stansbury Island. We found a nice little register left by SP member Eric and signed in. The weather turned out to be almost perfect by the time we hit the summits. We dropped off of Stansbury by taking a ridge directly to the west. A very nice hike.

Nice place  Sucess!

I've been there several times, but not for years. Once was in early January 1990.

Desert Island Disco  Sucess!

What a terrific place. One of the few places on earth you can hike on a desert island in a salty inland sea. Come when the weather is still cool--springtime or autumn--because it gets HOT out here.

Rock on Castle  Sucess!

Letting the new snow settle out a little in the Wasatch, I took this opportunity to listen to the Jimmy Hendrix Experience (just downloaded to my iPod) as I visited this cute little peak. Nice day. Lots of folks on the island, though. Up to no good, if you ask me.

Stansbury Island  Sucess!

I climbed the mountain from the west. It was a steep hike up to the ridgeline. There were several false summits that I had to climb over and fun scrambling along the way. All of the gunshots being fired below the mountain was a little alarming too.
