Such natural rock forms can protect us against sudden bad weather. They can be very useful in sites where no tent can be developed.

I documented these shelters during my last trekking (July 2-7, 2007) in Rudawy Janowickie Mts., SW Poland. Weather was bad with storms and many rains. It was difficult to do good pictures. Presented shelters are made by very large granite boulders. Such boulders almost of simple box shape origin after special weathering of granite. In such a rock weaker layers run vertically and horizontally and in this directions the rock is broken. Sometimes there are also formed very large overhangs which are very interesting for climbers. I documented many shelters in the Janowka Valley where rocks spectacular for climbing are situated (see diagram).
