Storm Mountain Falls Area

Storm Mountain Falls Area

Storm Mountain Picnic Area Ice Routes Storm Mountain Falls: I, WI4-5 - This is the route located on the left. It is the most popular ice climb in the area. The route follows ice located to the right of Psychobabble Wall and to the left of Reservoir Ridge. It is usually done in three pitches to the top of the route. You can rappel the route with two ropes Unnamed Route: I, WI4+ - This route is located to the right of Reservoir Ridge. It is one pitch long and climbed often when it is in good condition There are other routes located out of the photo to the left. Some ice forms on the wall to the left of Storm Mountain Falls. There is a route that follows the B-Pitch on Bumble Bee Wall but it rarely forms and some mixed climbing will be required. I noticed an ice route in the gully located to the right of Bumble Bee Wall that looked interesting

Isn't this where

back in the late 1970s, a family was
having a picnic in this area, and
an avalanche came down on top of
them? I remember reading something
about that. Great beta!

Re: Isn't this where

Wow, I haven’t heard about that story. The rock climbing history is this area is well known. There are several routes located around the island and on the quartzite cliffs in the photo. In winter, some ice forms on these walls too.

Re: Isn't this where

YES, it was probably an "ice avalanche"
that fell upon those unfortunate people.
I need to look it up in the archives.
The road was closed for a long time.

Re: Isn't this where

Yes, I know about that accident. It was highly publicized on the local news. That is actually located across the canyon from Storm Mountain Picnic Area. A group of us from the Wasatch Mountain Club went up that same route called Stairs Gulch. We didn’t have any problems but it is definitely a place where you should be careful of avalanches. Sadly, the people that died were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
