Took a wrong turn -- will get summit next time!

Gorgeous hike. Took a wrong turn and then was going to lose the light, so didn't get the summit. Next time.

With Lawlor  Sucess!

This seems to be a popular peak. Views from the top to the southwest were amazing. The trail up from Red Box was in very good condition, said the Forest Service folks, due to all the traffic directed here after Angeles Crest Highway's closure at the trailhead. Even the trudge up from the saddle wasn't as bad as I'd expected...

Great views  Sucess!

Nice hike and excellent views from the summit and at many spots along the way. We hiked up from Redbox and the trail was easy enough to follow. Picture perfect weather was the cherry on top.

class 3 goodness  Sucess!

Sweet class 3 terrain on the east side of the peak. Never found too much exposure and the rock was solid with minimal loose stuff. Best class 3 terrain I've found close to LA.

Training Hike  Sucess!

We were supposed to hike Mount Baldy this day but the weather wasn't cooperating so this peak was our back-up hike.

This hike was amazing because the conditions were just right. At first we were a little hesitate because it was foggy driving Angeles Crest highway on the way up, there were gnarly looking clouds above head, and it would sprinkle from time to time but it all worked out.

We got a really early start (for us) to try to beat the afternoon storm forecasted. It took us between 3-4 hours to complete the hike. Just FYI, there is like 20 false peaks before the summit.....at least that's what it felt like.

Since we had an amazing winter this past year with tons of rain this place was teeming with beautiful wildflowers! The flowers paired with the dramatic conditions made this hike really special.

Despite the looming clouds there was no wind at the summit and it felt amazingly warm. We signed the registrar and headed on our way.

Great training hike!

From the Saddle  Sucess!

Hiked up from the saddle between Lawlor and Strawberry...very easy trail to follow all the way to the top. Exposed to the sun mostly although there are a few shady spots along the way you can rest at.

fun peak  Sucess!

fun hike but the final ridge was annoying due to clouds rolling in. had to skedaddle before we could get lawlor.

Fun scramble  Sucess!

Done this a few times, sometimes hiking up Colby Canyon and other by riding my bike part way up nearby Josephine Peak. Nice little front range adventure.

Up the west ridge, down the east  Sucess!

A group of 8 scrambled up the "dangerous" class-3 west ridge and descended the trail down the east slope before going on to Mt Lawlor. This was my first experience with a lengthy class-3 ascent. There was some dangerous exposure in a few places, so I was glad to have an experienced, confident guide leading the way. I was also grateful we didn't go down that class-3 route, which I think would have been much more dangerous than going up.

Hiked via Red Box  Sucess!

Hiked via Red Box, which is now open. Trial is in good shape all the way to the saddle with Lawlor Mountain. he trial is still obvious after that, but it's a tough and very steep trial to the top, with minimal scrambling in a couple places. For someone starting over, it was a difficult hike, but very rewarding, and felt much more wild than every other hike I've done in the San Gabriels so far.

Trip report to come, if I can find the time to draft it.

Great SoCal Scramble  Sucess!

Have climbed this 3 times, each via the West ridge from Josephine Saddle. Plenty of fun to be had on the rocks, plus a nice leg warm-up out of Colby Canyon. An area to be nourished and treasured.

Colby Before Fire  Sucess!

Did this twice before the fire. It was really fun. One time I did it with my then girlfriend, now wife. She almost went off a cliff coming down the top when I let her lead, until that incident. It was never so easy to see the little markers coming back down the class 3 section before the fire. Hope this reopens soon, because the scrambling made it unique for Southern California.

From Josephine  Sucess!

Fun final climb up to the summit from the west. We were a little off route at the beginning and climbed some sketchy, crumbly rock, but once we found the faded arrows, the route was easy. There is still some poodle dog to negotiate between Josehpine and Strawberry, but it appears the area may be opening soon as there was a large Sierra Club trail crew working on the trail from Red Box to Strawberry Saddle. Continued along the ridge to Mt. Lawlor after Strawberry.

After Fire  Sucess!

Hiked up Colby Canyon from ACH. From Josephine Saddle, went up west ridge to summit. Trails are messed up, but it's still beautiful up there!
