Rock Climb  Sucess!

Climbed the North Face via a route called Strawberry Roam that was climbed by the Mendenhalls back in 1936. I had a topo that Ruth Mendenhall had scribbled down and a short route description. The climbing was OK and the rock was loose in sections. Tried a route up the direct center of the North Face earlier in the day but was stopped by difficult climbing in a shallow dihedral. Excellent day of climbing.

Snow on the Summit  Sucess!

It was 72 in my hometown Monrovia but there was lingering snow patches on the summit. Just a perfect day. It really is one of the most rewarding summits in the San Gabriels.

Great day - great hike  Sucess!

Hiked from Red Box with my wife and the two kids. Great last mile up to the peak. Gorgeous day with views from the top all the way to the ocean.

Something Different  Sucess!

Took the herd path from the Colby Canyon Trail. The Canyon was DRY and it was hot for April, but the rocky section up top was fun. Not too difficult either. On the way down I ran into a rattler. Scarry!

Nice class 3, though the purple arrows detract slightly.

1st- HPS - hike  Sucess!

My goal for the year was to climb 25 of the Sierra Clubs hundred peaks and this was trip No.1. We ascending via Colby Canyon to Josephine saddle and up along the ridge. The class three climbs were a bit initimading in the insane fog (visbility 15-ft), but it was quite surreal and beautiful at the same time. This is one hike I plan to do again.

Via West Ridge  Sucess!

Second time on Strawberry peak. Took a break from the snow and tried some class 3 scrambling. Tons of fun! Very nice day with little wind! There are still patches of snow on the north side.
I went down the East Ridge.

Third Time a Charm  Sucess!

Got it on the third time. First time it was sweltering and I ran out of water. Second I couldn't convince my hiking partner to go for more than 30 minutes. Nice hike.

morning sweetness  Sucess!

5 AM drive from UCLA for a 6 AM hike
greeting Helios in the early morn with a resounding hello
truly resounding!
lovely mountain echoes
sweaty backs, well-used legs
a well-loved trail
returning to a still snoozling roommate
what hilariousness

and oh, the beauty of the San Gabriels...!

Route Climbed: West Ridge (ascent) / East Ridge (descent)  Sucess!

Clear day and early morning start up Colby Canyon. The stream and waterfalls were all flowing well. Reached Josephine Saddle and started up the ridgeline towards Strawberry Peak. Still patches of snow in the covered areas. Reached the base of Strawberry and followed the well known purple arrows to the summit. Nice view but low clouds moved in quickly from the southwest. Decided to return via east ridge to Red Box.

No Pain No Gain  Sucess!

Gotta love an icy class 3 ridge. Circled the mountain and passed through Camp Colby on the way up to ascend Red Box. This made the hike about 14.5 miles round trip.

West Ridge Strawberry Peak  Sucess!

This is the only route to a summit in the San Gabriel front range that I know of that has sections of 3d class rock. I've done this route many times and it is always fun. Today, our group did Josephine Peak first, then Strawberry, then Lawlor. From Strawberry, we could see that Baldy still has snow on it.
