Stromatalite Fossil
A fossil stromatalite (big algae colony) in Nankoweap Canyon, Grand Canyon. The 1-gallon jug provides scale. There are a few of these things in the Nankoweap/Kwagunt/Carbon Creek area. Grand Canyon guides tend to call them "Brain Rocks". Living stromatalites may be seen today offshore Indonesia and Northern Australia.
